必須の洋書。溶媒の蒸留、生成方法が詳しく書かれ、多くの試薬が網羅されている。最近は関東化学、アルドリッチなど蒸留溶媒が多く市販され、以前のようにすべての溶媒を蒸留する必要はなくなりつつある。また、企業の目から、市販蒸留溶媒レベルで反応が行かないようでは実用化は難しい。一方、大学では、蒸留は実験のひとつであり、試薬の精製方法を知ることは、重要な基礎であることから、本書は非常に有用である。色々な精製方法を知った後、蒸留溶媒を購入するのは良いが、精製方法を知らずに精製溶媒を購入するのでは、長い目でみて、自分の技術が上達しない。訓練を含め、本書を使いながら、様々な精製方法を覚えるとよい。有機実験の手引きも簡潔なので、該当部分をあわせて使うとよりベター。

有機合成の精製と言えば、カラムクロマトグラフィーに頼りがちですが、スケールの大きな反応もカラムに頼る事が必ずしもクレバーとは言えません。本書は、再結晶、蒸留と言った操作をする上で、多くの情報を与えてくれます。頻繁に使うというものではありませんが、目の前の混合物に途方にくれたら、本書を開いてみる事をおすすめします。

これは有機、無機である(生化学のセクションについてはっきり知っていない)任意の合成化学者のための重要な資源です。この本は、共通の溶剤および試薬の莫大な数の浄化の上に簡潔な有益なエントリーを行っています。私は、いずれかの化学者がその人の書棚の上にこれを持たずに、どのように生き残ることができるか知りません!
