Chunkを足して文章を出すとかテーブルにしたいわけじゃなくて・・思った位置に思った文字を出したいんだよ・・と思っていると「Adding content at absolute positions」とかそのものズバリな章が用意されていたりします。

One of the clearest, easiest to follow technical books I've read in a long time.
Clear, step by step examples that are thoroughly explained make this a book you can understand, even without following along on the computer.

Finished my first PDF project in a week

I started with zero inside knowledge about PDF. Armed with this book, I finished my first project to generate reports in PDF format in 2 weeks; and I am heading comfortably to generate more complicated PDF files with buttons, graphs and things like that. This book is clearly written and digs in-depth. I highly recommend this book.

The iText Javadocs are pretty useless. Most method documentation echoes the method name. MyClass.makeSimpleJavaComment becomes "makes a simple java comment." So if you have any real questions, you have to buy this book or hit the forums, which typically suggest you buy the book. No problem. It's a good library and it's worth the cost of a book. Sort of...
This is one of those books that skip the much needed reference guide and goes with the Learn in 21 Days approach. Pretty frustrating...
I'm trying to get precise graph layouts that are super portable. I want at least point accuracy if not a couple of orders magnitude finer. Graphviz is a mess as far as precision goes. Cairo, it's parent project, is nearly as bad. I tried Batik with SVG. It was much better but it too left bounding boxes a little off, especially for fonts. I'm hoping embedded fonts and iText will do the trick. I just wish I could have opened this book and jumped to the "I know what I'm doing" chapter.
The author uses a movie database for most examples. Report writing makes a big part of the audience I guess. I was looking for something that shows the functionality a little bit better without the integration.
