「スティーブ・ジョブズ-偶像復活」（ジェフリー・ヤング、ウィリアム・サイモン）を薄めて新書にしたようなもの。独自の取材をしていないばかりか、新たな視点で語ることもなかった。また、著者の感覚や本書で紹介されているエピソードの多くは著者がMac系の雑誌で活躍していた1990年代のものであり、iPodをつくった男の現在ではなく過去を語っている時代感覚のズレもある。

この作品の良いところは、とにかく簡単に読めること。ひと通りことは記されているので「とりあえず読む」のには良いだろうが、スティーブ・ジョブズという類い希な存在の人となりに触れようと思うのであれば、はじめから「スティーブ・ジョブズ-偶像復活」などを読むことを勧める。

スティーブ・ジョブズほど波乱に満ちた生涯を送っている人間は、まずいない。
彼は、何度も大ゴケするのだが、そのたびに、必ず立ち上がってくる。
コンピューター業界の「ダルマさん」と言えるのかもしれない。

この本は、ジョブズの成功の秘密を声を大にして説明し、また、失敗の秘密も
こっそりと説明してくれるものだ。

成功の秘密は、開発、経営方針、他社との連携交渉、広告に及ぶのだが、
ここでは、常識的に開発についてのジョブズの言葉を引用する。

「ユーザー調査を通じて製品をデザインしていくことには、大きな困難が伴う。　
　大抵の場合、消費者は、具体的な形にして見てもらうまで、自分でも何が
　欲しいのかわからないものだからだ。」

失敗の秘密（？）は、非常識な若き日のジョブズから。

「海軍に入るより海賊になれ」と言って本社とは別棟に、異端児を集め、
　海賊旗を掲げたとのこと。
　アップル社を創立しながらアップル社を追われた男の面目躍如だ。

現在、iＰｏｄの成功で、ジョブズの地位は不動のものと思われるが、
ひょとすると、また転ぶかもしれない。
しかし、彼は必ずまた立ち上がってくるに違いない。
　
ジョブズを書いた本に面白くないものはない。この本もその一つだ。

私は特にAppleやMac信者ではなく、iPodも所有していませんが、ジョブズには以前から関心がありました。然るに、ゲイツに関する著作は何冊か読んでいましたが、ジョブズ本は読んだことがありませんでしたので、これ幸いと手に取りました。スラスラ読めて単純に面白かったです。内容も、生い立ちから現在までと幅広いものでした。しかし、殆ど全ての事柄がジョブズ側に取られていますので、客観性を保ちながらその人となりを書いた良書を読んだことのある方々には、ちょっと偏りを感じるかも知れません。でも、ジョブズのことを素早く知りたい方にはお勧めと思います。
