Adam Youngのソロ・プロジェクトであるOwl Cityのメジャー・デビュー盤。
インディー時代にも何枚か出していて、全米では確固たる人気を確立しているようです。

ドリーミーなエレクトロ・ポップが炸裂していて、躍動感溢れるビートに甘酸っぱいメロディー
そして、エフェクトをかけた伸びのあるヴォーカルが、ジャッケットそのままの夏気分に
させてくれるちょっぴりほろ苦さも加味された１００％夏仕様のアルバム。

曲のタイトルも夏を連想させるものばかりで、アコースティック・ギターと切ないメロディー
に女性ヴォーカルのコーラスが溶け合う珠玉のエレクトロ・ポップ"The Saltwater Room"
"Meteor shower"、"On The Wing"、"Fireflies"でのノスタルジックな雰囲気も逸脱！
やや抑揚を抑えたヴォーカルラインと印象的な女性コーラスから後半にかけて、
ビートが加速していく様が気持ち良い"The Tip Of The Iceberg"
キラキラのメロディーが散りばめられた"Vanilla Twilight"、アルバム通して中弛みもなく、
今年の夏のサウンドトラックとしてオススメなアルバム！

MySpaceから火のついたエレクトロソロユニット、Owl Cityの2ndアルバムです。

昨今のエレクトロというと、バキバキのタイトなビートに畳み掛けるように鳴り響くシンセ…といったハウスやクラブ向なアゲアゲ系が多いですが…

このOwl Cityはそういったものとは違う、オシャレで小柄、のあるエレポップといった印象を受けました。アゲアゲよりウキウキ先行といった、小さな子どもにでも馴染みそうなかわいい楽曲が多いです。
にしてもこのアルバム、楽しいです。 ジャケ通り、夏の海によく映える爽やかなサウンドと、のんびりほんわかしたあたたかな太陽の光のようなヴォーカルは素晴らしいの一言。Jason Mrazがエレクトロをやったらこんな感じかな…といった雰囲気です。

ではお気に入り曲の解説を。

#2 The Bird The Worm
アコースティックギターから始まる夏の気配満タンな曲です。ピアノなども使われていて若干エレクトロ色は弱いですが、口ずさみたくなる「ダーダッター」の部分は夏の始まりを知らせるような楽しい雰囲気で溢れています。

#4 Umbrella Beach
イントロからいきなりディズニーの世界のようなキラキラ感溢れるアルペジオ調の音は素直に楽しいです。シャカシャカしたビートにピチカートやさざ波の音など、とにかく楽しさ満点。「海へ行こうよ!」みたいな青春のワンシーンに流れてきそうです。

#5 The Saltwater Room
静かなギターから始まり、高音なピアノ×ストリング音がわずかに響く、浜辺でのんびり見上げる夏の空を彷彿とさせる曲です。かわいらしい声の女性ヴォーカルもあり、うまくサウンドと絡み合っていてここちよいです。

#8 On The Wing
風に乗ったかのような爽快さがある曲です。どこかもの憂げな不思議感覚のあるストリングとエレサウンドが迫ってくる、空の向こうへと連れていってくれるような曲です。

#9 Fireflies
このアルバムの中では少しばかり異色で、どこか夕方の海の寂しさの漂うようなシンセにプチオーケストラと随所に現れる効果音、厚みのある音が甘酸っぱく、ノスタルジックな曲です。このアルバムで1番のお気に入り曲です。

#11 Vanilla Twilight
優しさに溢れた雰囲気のあるピアノ主体のエレクトロバラード。これまで楽しい楽曲だらけだったのにくらべ、とうとう夏の終わりが来たのかと思わせるような寂しさを感じさせる、ひと夏の思い出のBGMのような曲です。


ちなみに10/17付の全米ビルボードにて、シングルカットされたFirefliesが11位に上昇!この調子でどんどんヒットして、色んな人に知っていただきたいです。

来年の夏は海にコンポを持って行ってこのCDをかけたい…

Billbordランキングでowlcityを知り、
今回　MAYBE I'M DREAMING とあわせて購入しました。

私は普段趣味で絵を描くんですが、作業用BGMに驚きの効果を発揮します。
キラキラとして落ち着きのある曲調、かと思ったら爽やかな曲で癒されたり。
ですが、作業に支障が出るほどうるさい曲はありません。
作業に集中しながら聴ける曲ばかりですので、ぜひ一度お試しあれ。

MAYBE I'M DREAMINGと比較するといくつか同じ楽曲がありますので、
私のように同時購入の際は気をつけておくと良いかもしれません。

60年代、70年代のビーチボーイズの楽曲の焼き直し、よく言えばトリビュートでしょうか？ただBBを知らない世代には新鮮に聞こえるのでしょうね。
