1961年オーストラリアのシドニー出身のシモーネ・ヤング（Simone Young）指揮、ハンブルク・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団による「初稿によるブルックナーの交響曲」シリーズ。今回が第4弾でいよいよ傑作「第8番」の登場となる。

もちろん、ヤングのシリーズで重要なのは「初稿」を用いている点にある。ブルックナーの交響曲には様々なスコアが存在しており、通常聴かれるものは「最終的に作曲者が自身の意図により修正を行ったと考えられるもの」で、ノヴァークやハースといった学者がこの見地から編集したスコアによる。ただ、ブルックナーの場合、その「本人の意図」の推し量りがことのほか難しい。ブルックナーの交響曲は基本的に改訂により「古典的」な作品へと変貌している。特徴的な声部の扱い、楽器書法の不均一性、長大な展開、差し挟まれる全休符・・・これらは改訂のたびに姿を減じる。では、新しい交響曲を作るたびに、何度も改訂を繰り返す行為をなぜブルックナーは行ったのか？彼の作りたかった音楽は、もっと別に存在していたのではないか・・・？

「初稿」を聴くと、その浪漫的で大胆な着想に驚かされる。改訂によって整えられ、同じ展開を持っていた作品が実は様々な変容を含んでいたことがわかる。ヤングの秀逸な点はそれを学術的に探求したのではなく、純粋な音楽作品として完成させるためのアプローチに徹していることである。

全体的に音色の融合度が高い。音色は疎な部分と密な部分のバランスが巧みで、多少の構造上の欠点を表現力で見事に覆い隠してしまう。クライマックスに向かう推進性はまさしく「迫真」と言えるもので、背後の闇をも巻き込むようなリアリティに満ちている。初稿ならではの第1楽章のフォルティッシモの終結が凄い。全曲に渡ってそのテンションが持続しているが、個人的に最も感銘を受けたのが第2楽章のスケルツォ。同じ音型の繰り返しながら、金管陣の旋律の引渡しが絶妙で、その豊かな呼応力と間合いに聴き手の心拍をどんどん高めていく。圧巻の一幕と言える。ブルックナーの様々な録音の中でもことさら存在意義の大きい一枚であることは間違いないと思う。

シモーネ・ヤングのブルックナー8番は粗いと思う。この演奏は、ブルックナーをよく研究していることをうかがわせるし、その点、細心な演奏である反面、アンサンブルの悪さバランスの悪さを合わせ持つ（木管が聞こえない）。美しいブルックナーを求める人はこの商品は買わない方が良いと思う。しかし、仮に彼女がこの作品に、あえて美しさや重々しさを与えず、研究成果だけを表したとしたら、彼女はしたたかだと思う。なぜなら、この作品がブルックナーの交響曲の通過点に過ぎないことをリスナーに認識させてくれるかも知れないからである。
