新境地というような感じでもないのだが、今までのどのアルバムとも違う印象が残る作品。
大雑把に言えば２種類の曲がこのアルバムにはある。
今まで以上に無駄をそぎ落としたストレートなロックンロールと
中期〜後期ビートルズの影響が伺えるアレンジが厚く施されたミディアムテンポの曲。
これらを絶妙な曲順と曲のつなぎ方で流れるように聴かせる。
これはプロデュースの勝利なのでは？
一曲一曲が別個に存在するのではなく、流れの中で生きている。
通しで聴くと、最後には不思議と胸が熱くなる。
こういうアルバムは過去にはなく、新鮮な驚きがある。

予想以上の出来で、驚いている。
再結成アルバム"LAP OF LUXURY"は大成功したが、外部の売れっ子ソングライターの起用により古くからのファンや評論家からは酷評の嵐で、続く"BUSTED"は若干の軌道修正がなされたがシングルがヒットした程度でアルバムもマイナーヒット程度。
それから起死回生ともいえる"WOKE UP WITH A MONSTER","CHEAP TRICK'97"をリリースし、最高傑作ともいえるような内容だったが、メジャーレーベルのサポート不足や契約解除により正当な評価を受けられず。
'03年の"SPECIAL ONE"は素晴らしい出来ではあったが、随分と落ち着いた感もあり物足りなさを感じた。一般的な評価が高い"ROCKFORD"は前半の並々ならぬテンションの高さがやたらと目立ち後半はポップに落ち着きすぎて全体的にやや物足りない感が...
個人的には"W.U.W.A.M","C.T'97"は最高傑作に値する内容だと思うが、それ以降の作品に関しては気に入ってはいるが同時に物足りなさや不満があったので、正直そこまで期待はしていなかった。
だが、どうだろう。収録時間の少なさに不安は感じたが、メロディとパワーが全曲に注がれていてコンセプトアルバムに似た印象を受けた。これは過去の名作群にもない充実度である。この際時間の短さはどうでもいいくらい。
アメリカのファンの間では"THE LATEST"の評価は軒並み高いので、本国で成功してもらいたいね。去年、あれだけJOURNEYの"REVELATION"が成功を収めたんだから。"REVELATION"以上の素晴らしさだと思うので、聞く価値あり。

他の方も概ね好評価されているように、初期Cheap Trickの香りがプンプンする快作です。

Sladeのカバーである２や以前から未発表曲として有名だった３、PEPSIのCMソングでおなじみ７など聞き覚えのある曲が多いこともあり、正直未発表曲集なのかと思いました。古くからのファンは４のタイトルを聞いただけでＣＤ屋に走ることでしょう。

Lap Of Luxury以降、当然のごとく"はずれなし"と言える作品を出し続けてきましたが、あきらかにそれ以前の作品群とは色が違っていました。これが時代の変化、円熟味ってことなのかな、などと自分に言い聞かせてきたものの、どこか心から納得できないものがあったのですが、デビュー32年目というこの時期にきて、まさかこれほど強力なアルバムをリリースするとはビックリです。

昨年のBudokan Againで5本ネックのギターをしんどそうに抱えるリックの姿に年齢を感じずにはいられませんでしたが、音のほうは若返る一方で完全に全盛期の姿を取り戻し、嬉しくて涙がでます。音の印象としては、強いて言えばIn Color(Albini Version)が一番近いかなという感じでしょうか。若い方にも是非お勧めしたい傑作です。
