このアポロ13号の事故について、評論家の立花隆氏がこう言っていたのを鮮明に覚えています。

「アポロ13号には事故を未然に防げなかったところに人間の弱さがあります。そして事故が起きてもけして諦めずに生還することに成功したところに人間の強さがあります」

この映画は現実に起きた月探査宇宙船アポロ13号の事故を映像化したものです。

まず、映像が本当に美しい。
95年のCGとは思えない再現度で、いったいどこからがCGでどこからが資料映像なのか判別がつきません。
実際にアポロ計画に関わった人たちが試写会で「あんな資料映像あったっけ？」と真顔で監督に尋ねただけはあります。

そして、宇宙という何の支援も望めない状況下で、生還するためにあらゆる努力を遂行する飛行士たちとNASAスタッフの戦いは文句なしにかっこいい。
ここまで何のためらいもなく「かっこいい」といえる人たちはそうそういないだろう。
爆発事故によって流出する酸素や電力、高まっていく二酸化炭素濃度……
容赦なく襲いかかってくる宇宙空間という、人類が今まで経験したことのない極限状態の数々。

物語終盤になると、この映画を見ている人は間違いなく最後の危機に立ち向かう宇宙飛行士たちと、地上で固唾をのんで見守るスタッフや家族たちと一心同体になっているに違いありません。

月面着陸から今年で40年が経ちました。
私などはその時代は生まれていませんが、この映画を観た後だと自分が体験したことのない時代だとは思えなくなります。

アポロ13号の船長ジム・ラベル氏の言葉が印象的です。
「私は今でもふと考えます。あの月へ、今度は誰が『戻る』のだろうかと」

この映画はもう20回以上見ています。アポロ計画の映画で記録映画ではなく、ヒューマンドキュメンタリー的な映画です。凄く感動します。

最近、ロン・ハワード監督作品を固めて見た。未見なのは、初期の「バニシング　ＩＮ　ＴＵＲＢＯ」「ラブ　ＩＮ　ニューヨーク」、近作の「グリンチ」「ミッシング」ぐらいだ。そういう私がベスト３を選ぶなら、１位「遥かなる大地へ」、２位「アポロ１３」、３位「スプラッシュ」になる。特に「アポロ１３」は万人受けするタイプの映画だと思う。オススメ。ちなみに、ワーストは「エドＴＶ」か「バックマン家の人々」か。
