マイブラの正統な後継者として注目のシューゲイザー・ユニット"Fleeting
Joys"。大絶賛されたデビューアルバム『despondent transponder』に続
くセカンドアルバムが遂に登場!

ジョン(ギター/ヴォーカル)、ロリカ(ベース/ヴォーカル)の2人が
自宅で制作する楽曲は、マイブラを思わせるノイジーなギターの轟音とサ
イケデリックに揺れるメロディーがもつ特別な空気感を醸し出し、かつて
クリエイション・レコードで夢を描いたアラン・マッギーの理想型がここ
に存在することを感じさせてくれます。

「Despondent Transponder」で提示した、揺れる轟音ギター、ロリカの
ウィスパー・ヴォイスは本作「Occult Radiance」でも健在。さらにレ
コーディング・スタジオを変更して制作された楽曲は、アレンジが多彩で
音色がソリッドに生まれ変わり、Ulrich Schnaussの繊細さと、70年代の
サイケデリック・ロックが融合したかのような作品に仕上がりました。

アメリカ・カリフォルニアのジョンとロリカによるシューゲイザー・
ユニット。2006年にリリースしたデビューアルバム「Despondent
Transponder」がシューゲイザー・ファンの間で話題となり、アメリ

シューゲイザーというのは兎角難儀なジャンルです。
もともとは時代的な側面からカテゴリーされたという背景もあり、まったく違う音を出すアーティストがこのマニアックともいえるジャンルに十把ひとからげに放り込まれてしまっている。
ギターノイズ、美メロといった要素は他ジャンルとの親和性も高く（ギターポップ、ネオアコ、ポストロック、エレクトロニカ・・）、
音楽ファンにとっては実においしい音楽ではあるのですが、それがまた混乱を招く要因でもあります。
マイブラとペイルセインツ、スワーブドライバーを同時に聞いて、一体誰が同一ジャンルだと思うだろう？
こういった混沌とした内実はプログレのそれにもよく似ており、どういったスタンスでこのジャンルに向き合うかはリスナーの裁量によるものがかなりの割合を占めています。
「俺はシューゲイザーのここが好きだからこれを聞くんだ」という意思表示です。
しかしどんなシューゲ好きでもとりあえず手にとっていい「定点」のようなものがあったっていい。
そういう意味でかなりありがたいのがこの作品です。

フリーティングジョイズはまさにシューゲイザーが好きな人間のためにあるようなバンドです。
彼らの音を聞いていると偉大な先人の音にいかに敬意を払っているかがよく分かる。
1stでは、持ち前のメロディセンスをもろ「loveless」の白昼夢酩酊サウンドに絡ませ、質の高い統一感のある作品に仕上げていました。
とにかく「私たちはシュゲーザーが好きだからやるんだ」という開き直ったかのような創作スタンスが潔いし、今作でもその視点は少しもぶれていません。
前作と比較すると今回はとにかくカラフル。
「loveless」のシュミレートは前作でやり尽したといわんばかりに、様々なギター音を散りばめた多様性に富んだ一枚に仕上がっています。
どの曲もギターによるサイケデリアを演出しつつも実にポップで、そのメロが普遍的なのが特徴です。
彼らはとにかくソングライティングがいい。
サウンドメイクは正直言ってオリジナリティのあるものとはいえませんが、自身のポップセンスに対して、ギターをどう鳴らすがというチョイスが絶妙なのです。
シューゲイザーがどういう音楽の範疇で語られるかはリスナーによりけりですが、
ギターポップとしてシューゲイザーを扱うのなら、彼らの作品は紛れもない名盤でしょう。

マイブラはその余りにも大きな存在感で他のシューゲイザーバンドを脅かしています。
そんな中でシューゲイザー好きのだれもが目を光らせるようなサウンドを自然体で鳴らしてくれる彼らはありがたい存在であると感じます。
ネオ・シューゲの先鋒に立つ存在がこういうスタンスをとっているのは、ちょっと苦笑いですが、愛すべきバンドとして、末永く音源を出し続けてほしい。
マイブラみたいにはならないでね。
