2009 album by one of the finest American songwriters of his generation. Working on a Dream was recorded with the E Street Band and features 12 new Springsteen compositions plus a bonus track: 'The Wrestler'. . It is the fourth collaboration between Springsteen and Brendan O'Brien, who produced and mixed the album. Springsteen also wrote an eponymous song for Darren Aronofsky's 2008 film The Wrestler. The song, also titled 'The Wrestler' won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. SBME. 2009.

　なんと前作から1年ちょっとでの新作は、久しぶりの2作連続“with E Street Band”！。しかも、ツアーの合間のレコーディングって、どんだけ創作意欲が湧きあがってんのさ！

　酸いも甘いも噛み分けた、“現代最高の詩人”とまで評される60歳近い大ベテランが、巡り巡って辿り着いた先は、虚飾をそぎ落とした、シンプルにして赤裸々な世界。（良い意味で）直球過ぎるほどにストレートな歌詞には、「愛」だの「夢」だの「希望」「勇気」だのと、こっちが少々気恥ずかしくなるほどなんだが、この8年間に疲弊しきったアメリカに向ける、ボスなりの前向きなメッセージなんだろうね。今の10代にどう受け取められるかはわからないが、「この人生、そして来世も、貴方と出会えて幸せだった。これ以上何を望もう！〜（6）より」なんて歌われちゃったらさ、う〜ん、こういうの弱いなぁ〜（笑）。

　“ボス史上最もポップ”だそうだが、せっかくE Street Bandと組みながら、“引きの美学”とでも言おうか、バックはあくまで控え目な印象。疾走するドライブ感にはやや欠けていて、ともすれば甘〜くなりがちな所もチラホラ見受けられるね。とはいえ、行き過ぎぬよう、B・オブライエンがきっちり要所を締めているのは、さすがの仕事振り。

　後半の曲が若干弱いものの、アルバムは亡き友、ダニーに捧げる（12）で深い余韻を残しながら静かに幕を閉じ…るはずなのに、ボートラ扱いの（13）〜M・ローク主演映画の主題歌〜がまったく余計！

本作は、2008年4月にメラノーマ（皮膚がんの一種)のため亡くなった、盟友であり名キーボーディストでありE Street Bandのメンバーであった、“Phantom”Danに捧げられています（Phantomは昔の出来事でつけられたあだ名とか）。
Bruceの想いのゆえか分かりませんが、とんでもなく気合の入った好盤です。そして僕には、聞くほどに高校時代に「Born to Run」を聞いた時の感覚が甦ってきます。決して過去の手法を踏襲したということではなく、一緒に歌いたくなるシンプルさと親しみやすさ、力強さ、そしてBruceの歌声の印象のためでしょう。

Amazonから届いて現物を見て、まず、“デカッ！”。普通のCDジャケに比べて、タテもヨコも２センチ位大きい。開くとまるで小さな絵本のようで、歌詞と楽曲のイメージにあったイラストや写真が見事にレイアウトされている。楽曲は全般的にとてもストレ−ト。イントロが短くいきなり歌に入り、もうサビ？というくらいに。でも、コード進行やアレンジが充分練られているため、退屈しているヒマはないです。

曲について全部の感想を述べたいほどだけれど、一応絞ったつもり。
１曲目は８分弱の大作、でも全然長く感じない。下から徐々に突き上げるようなAメロと一気に開放感もたらすサビメロとの見事な対比とストーリー性が素晴らしい歌詞、そして秀逸なアレンジでダメ押し。タイトル曲３はイントロの生楽器の音色の豊かさにハッとし、サビは自分がいつまでも落ちてこない紙ヒコーキに乗った感じ、爽快。６も一見簡単そうな曲なのだが、サビやブリッジのコード展開が巧み。一転“ド”ブルース調の７、チョイトねじれた作りが痛快。９、“シブ”カッコいい。テープ逆回転風のGソロや２番から左ｃｈに聞こえるセンス良いGアルペジオなど聞き所満載。

最近は、（年のせいか）一度聞くと間隔があいてしまうことが多いのですが、もうヘビーローテンションになっています。

Bruce Springsteenの新作を聴いて、アルバム製作に掛ける時間・金額がその内容に比例するなどとは何の意味も持たないことを改めて認識させられた。前作から約1年振りの新作、近年になくBruceの精神的充実が伺える内容に仕上がっている。2009年、アメリカ史上初の黒人大統領が誕生した。全世界が心から新大統領を歓迎したが、アメリカ本国ではその思いは到底言葉では言い表せない期待と不安が交錯しているかのようであった。アメリカとアメリカ人の希望と挫折を切々と、励まし憂い歌い続けてきたBruce Springsteenにとっては、特に感慨深いものがあったであろう。そういう事からも、彼が如何に気持ちがノッテ、この作品を作り上げたか想像するに難くない。作品全体の印象は分かりやすく、覚えやすいご機嫌なナンバーが続く。とは言え、決してポップスに陥ることのない紛れもないアメリカン・ロックそのものである。特にタイトル曲「Working on Dream」は秀逸な出来栄えだ。Bruceの新作を聴いていると、本当に新しいアメリカが歩み始めているかの如く、錯覚に陥る程に活気と自信に満ち溢れている。このアルバムから元気をもらった、とまた錯覚せずにはいられない作品だ。
