Album Details

2009 release, the highly anticipated sixth album from The Derek Trucks band. Self-produced by Trucks in his home studio in Florida, it represents the band's natural evolution as they move forward integrating influences that span a variety of musical genres. Known for their Blues roots, the group takes this album well beyond Blues to incorporate the larger sounds of Rock and Soul. The band consists of Derek Trucks on guitar, Todd Smallie on bass, percussionist Count M'Buto, Yonrico Scott on drums, Kofi Burbridge on keyboards and vocalist Mike Mattison. The band was joined by pals like Doyle Bramhall II, Oteil Burbridge and Trucks' wife, Susan Tedeschi in the studio. Bramhall takes over vocal duties on two songs, "Maybe This Time" and "Our Love." Already Free reflects all of Trucks' many influences and experiences, and highlights the quintessential Derek Trucks Band sound of mixing soulful vocals and expert guitar playing on what is poised to be the band's definitive album.

ギター雑誌を読まなくなって随分になるので、デレクのことは全く知らず、ジャケットと視聴の好印象で買いました。
それにしても、スライドとフィンガリングの（速射砲のような）絶妙のコンビネーション、本当にスゴイですね。１曲目からカラダ引きつりっ放し、言葉になりません。
でも、自分がこのアルバムが気に入った大きな理由は、抜群のギターテクではなく、ブルースやサザン・ロック等をベースの古き良きアメリカン・バンドの香りにワールド・ミュージックがミックスされた多彩な楽曲そのもののレベルが高いから。そして、聴く者を飽きさせない良く練られたアレンジに乗って、歌や曲への貢献を常に考えながら精魂込めたフレーズを繰り出すデレクのギターに、結果として鮮烈な印象を受けたからだと思います。
芸達者なDsとBはじめ、よくまあこんなに良いグルーヴを出す面子が集まったものです。
インナージャケにはメンバーの楽しげなショットが。良い音を出す人たちはやはり良い笑顔をしています。

年初から、自分にとって今年のベスト３かもしれないアルバムに出会えました。
とてもウレシイです。

　J・フルシアンテ、J・メイヤーとで、「現代の3大ギタリスト」だそうですが、バンド名義での6作目はセルフ・プロデュース。クラプトン・バンドでの共演から、（2）（3）（6）（7）ではD・ブラムホールが共同プロデュース＆渋いボーカルとギターで参加、（10）では、奥様のS・テデスキがボーカルと、またもや気の合う仲間たちと、素晴らしい音楽を届けてくれたね。このバンドは、ボーカルがやや平坦なので、ドイルやスーザンの参加はいいアクセントになっているね。

　いやぁ〜、今回も、ぶっといスライドがうねるうねる（笑）。のっけから（1）ディランのカバーなんだけど、完全に自分たちのものにしていて驚かされた。全体的には、ジャケット写真や「Already Free」のタイトルが示す通り、ゆったりとしていて心地よい、ミディアム系の曲が中心なんだが、やはり芯がしっかりしているせいか、散漫な印象はみじんもないね。

　どうしても、「クラプトン」→「ドミノス」→「スライド」→「D・オールマンの後継者」みたいなイメージから、ブルースを基盤とした“ルーツロック“の範疇で捉えられがちだけど、この人はもっとレンジが広く、懐も深い。ファンク、ジャズ、フュージョンからアフリカンやインドあたりのエスニックな感覚までも兼ね備えた、彼独自の音世界が心地いい。いやぁ〜、いいわ、これ！

スライドギターのサウンドが大好きな私にとって、常に気になる存在でしたが、今回初めてアルバムを購入しました。聴いて後悔しました。なんでもっと早く聴かなかったんだろうと。他の方のレビューによると今回はバンドサウンドを重視とのこと。独りよがり的にガリガリとギターを弾かれるより全然好ましく思います。オープニングのディランのナンバーは、彼のオリジナルといってもわからないぐらい昇華されています。この曲のラストで、フェイドアウトしてゆくスライドギターを聴きながら、このまま延々ソロを続けてくれてもいいのにと思った人は多いんではないでしょうか。それほど見事な出来です。サニー・ランドレスが昨年出したアルバムで、通常の野太いサウンドにプラスしてちょっとロウエル・ジョージにも似たトーンのスライドを意図的に使い分けていたのとは違い、あくまでデュアン・オールマンに近いトーンで実直に弾き続ける姿に感銘を受けました。ジャケットのインナー写真に、ギブソンのＳＧの写真が何枚かあり、ここにもデュアンへのリスペクトが感じられます。こんなアルバムを突きつけられると本当にグーの音も出ません。今年はまだ１ヶ月も終わっていませんが、たぶんベスト３に入る出来だと確約できます。ファンキーなロックが好きだという人は、ぜひ一聴をおススメします。
