｢川嶋哲郎というとフリーキーなイメージが強かったから、これまでアルバムを聴いてこなかったけど、今度のワンホーンカルテットは、よく歌っていて実にイイよ。」
そう教えてもらって買ったこのアルバムは、本当に良かった。
　まず、とにかくオリジナル曲が良い。「曲に魂を込めたい。」それを川嶋哲郎は目指して演奏しているとのこと。そのために、テナーサックスで魂を込めて演奏できるように、魂を込めて作曲したのだろう。
「複雑なアレンジをするのは、曲に力がないから。」彼はそう言って、シンプルにテナーで魂を込めて歌うための曲を書いたのだ。
　1曲目「哀歌」が佳曲だ。「哀歌」という日本語のタイトルが、月並みな「哀愁」という言葉で片づけたくない、日本人テナー奏者の気迫を物語る。職業作曲家の作る演歌をただ歌うだけの演歌歌手のようにではなく、テナーが歌うための入魂の作曲、そして演奏だ。
　タイトルナンバーだけでなく、全10曲中6曲のオリジナルがすべて良い曲と演奏。重くなり過ぎないように、アルバム全体のバランスを考えて作ってある。残り4曲の選曲は、むしろ緩徐楽章としての役割のようにも感じる。シャンソンの｢暗い日曜日｣は出だしが演歌っぽくなり過ぎた嫌いがあるが、展開部のソロはいい。
　田中信正ｐ、安田幸司ｂ、長谷川学dsの3人は、基本的に曲の良さと川嶋哲郎のサックスを引き立てることに専念、一体感のある良いバッキングで、いい仕事だ。
　魂を込めた曲の良さと演奏が心に残る佳作。これを薦めてくれた藤田氏に感謝したい。

オリジナルに加え、ジャズからは「イージーリビング」、ファドからは「はしけ」、シャンソンからは「暗い日曜日」が取り上げられている。それぞれに異なったアプローチで、当代テナーの第一人者の多彩な才能を満喫できる。特に一曲目のオリジナル「哀歌」の泣きというか、哀愁溢れる音色、美しいメロディーはどうだ。この曲を聴くだけでも、このＣＤを聴く意味がある。テナーのワンホーン・カルテットはしみじみいいものですね（松本敏之）
