本作は初期中島みゆきの最高傑作と私は思う。詞、歌とバック・バンドまたはストリングスの結合が完璧。捨て曲なしの極めつけの名盤で、どれもＬＰ時代から耳になじんだ曲ばかり。東京で単身生活を送っていた者には胸に迫る詞や励まされる詞が聴きやすいフォーク／フォーク・ロックのサウンドで歌われ、ＬＰを擦り切れるほど聴いた、感謝しきれない思い出の作品。今聴き直しても古さは微塵もない。曲順にコメントします。

１　彼女ならではの詩、歌を演歌っぽくドラマチックに盛り上げる。
２　アコギの（弾き語り？）フォーク調で始まり、後半バック・バンドの音とストリングスがかぶさる。詞に出てくるアローン・アゲインが時代を感じさせる。
３と４　この２曲はメドレー。本作前半のハイライト。ストリングスやバンジョーも交えたスケールの大きい展開が素晴らしい。
５　しんみりしたアコギの（弾き語り？）のフォーク調で始まり、後半オーケストラとバック・バンドの音がかぶさって盛り上がる。
６　目をさませ、つけあがるな、という詞が、日本的フォーク・ロックで歌われ、聞き辛さはない。
７　「あなた」に懇願するフォーク。ストリングスが絶妙にからまる。
８　一転して明るいリズミカルな曲
９　この初期中島みゆきを代表する超名曲は説明不要でしょう。映像が鮮明に浮かぶ詞。とてつもなく奥深い音。彼女でなければ作れない音世界が最高です。
１０　ポップな曲で、途中からのテンポが上がる展開とバック・コーラスが素晴らしい。本作を締めくくるのにふさわしい佳曲。

後のライヴ盤「歌暦」で、上記６と９が選ばれたことが、本作は快心の出来であったことを物語っているでしょう。

７０年代では最高傑作だと思います。暗いふられ歌のイメージが強かったころですがこのアルバムには応援ソングが多いです。元気がないときに聴くとパワーをもらえることでしょう。楽曲レベルもそれまでの作品より成長していると思います。紙ジャケはみんなが言っているようにお粗末です。紙ジャケとはＬＰ盤を忠実に再現するとともにリマスターでクリアな音にして発売することに意味があるのに、帯もないしリマスターもないし紙ジャケの質もかなり安っぽい。ヤマハも無駄な仕事してるなと思わせられますが作品は名盤です。

単なる、「ふられ歌」と言う作風から、「タクシードライバー」や、「狼になりたい」、「親愛なる者へ」と社会派的作品へと転換をしていった頃の中島みゆきのアルバムです。

彼女の持ち味である、心をそのまま切り取った詩と、心の中で繰り返し口ずさみたくなるメロディーが綺麗に融合しています。30年以上経った今聞いても新鮮に聞こえるのは、彼女の才能が当時から突出しているからだと勝手に理解しています。
