第6曲のアリア「But who may abide the day of his Coming? 彼が来る日を誰が耐えられようか？」これは、メサイア（救世主）が来る時、人間は、その恐怖に耐えられないということを歌っている。しかも、メサイアつまりキリストさんは「a refiner's fire 精錬する者の火」まるで、火を吹くゴジラのように悪者たちを焼き殺す怖い人だと歌う。ところが、実際にやって来たキリストさんは、「こわい、こわい」と怖れられていたが、実はやさしい人だったというのがメサイア第1部の「落ち」である。つまり第6曲のアリア「But who may abide the day of his Coming?」は「キリストさんは怖い人かと思っていたらやさしい人だった」ということを強調するためのチャールズ・ジェネンズ（Charles Jennens、メサイアの台本を作った人）とヘンデルの演出だ。その演出は、この第6曲がシチリアーノ風の美しい歌であるがゆえになおさら効果的である（中間部は激しいが）。それを、Catherine Wyn-Rogers は、まるで棒読みで歌っている。

第7曲「And he shall purify」は荘厳な合唱。第8曲「受胎告知」はリズミックな3拍子だ。その後、すぐにキリストさんが生まれるかと思わせておきながら、第9, 10曲は短調で「闇の中の光」がものものしく歌われ、第11曲「For unto us a Child is born」でキリストさんが生まれる。

第13曲、ルカ第2章第8 - 11節のキリスト誕生が天使たちによって羊飼いに伝えられるおめでたい情景へ至るまえに、第12曲「Pifa」が序として演奏されるが、それはオペラの間奏曲だ。オラトリオ《メサイア》は、短調、長調の曲、美しい曲・激しい曲の交替が物語を盛り上げるまさに音楽劇であるはずだが、クリストファーズの指揮は、演劇的表現という視点から見て、私は味気なさを感じる。
