もともとこういうのが「正義」だと思っている。あんまり頭を使いすぎると大事なことが見えなくなる。そういう意味ではこの映画は頭でっかちの人間にはいい薬になるのでは。人を裁くという原点だと思う。弁護士になりたい人はまずこの映画を見ることが必要だと思いますね。チャールズ・ブロンソンに共感出来ない人は弁護士になったらいけません。

　先に２作目のロサンゼルス（原題 Death Wish2）を見てしまったのだが、本作品を見ると、ブロンソン扮するカージーが、いかにして「処刑人」に変身していったのかがよくわかり面白かった。
　最初はコインをいれた靴下で悪党を殴っただけで自責の念で激しく慟哭していたのが、最後のシーンでは、チンピラを見て、まるで狩る獲物を見つけたかのようにニヤリと笑うカージーは、もともと性格の深層にあった残酷な処刑人の姿が事件をきっかけにして表層化し本来の自分を発見したかのようだ。悪の処刑をするうちに、だんだんと妻と娘をなくした悲しみは何処へやら、といった様子だ。
　そういったカージーにしたてあげたのは、アメリカ世論のビジランテ（訳ではアマチュア刑事となっていたが今は自警団と訳すのが普通）に対する大きな支持だ。カージーが田舎を訪れたときのシークエンスが興味深い。「ここでは銃は、ただの道具のひとつだよ」というカージーのクライアントは「銃のおかげでここでは夜にも公園を散歩できるんだ」と言う。基本的にその理屈は今も代わりはないが、今ではアメリカでは銃を持っていても夜に散歩する人間はいない。相手も銃を持っているからだ。
　ブロンソンの苦悩と転身、そして銃社会について考えさせられるアクション映画になっている。

5.0 out of 5 stars 英国を代表する奇才Michael Winner監督作品, 2009/1/15
だけに、Hollywoodで作られる犯罪アクション物とは、雰囲気が全く違います。
舞台が冬のNew Yorkという事もあるのでしょうが、画面から感じられるのはCoolというか荒涼とした異常な冷たさです。
妻を殺され、娘をレイプされた親父が自警団となって街のチンピラ、ダニ達を成敗するというどうにもやり切れないStoryにも理由があるのでしょう。
同じ自警団でも「ダーティハリー2」の白バイ警官たちの明るさ・ふてぶてしさとは違って、初犯時は自分の行動の恐ろしさに嘔吐してしまうのですが、
徐々に快感を得ていく過程を冷めた感覚で捉えています。
ブロンソンが最も充実していた時期の作品だけに、文句無く素晴らしい演技を観せてくれます（元々は大根役者だという評判ですが．．．）。
ジョディ・フォスター主演の「ブレイブ・ワン」と何かと比較されているようですが、殺伐感を描いたという点で似て非なる作品だと思います。

音楽もHerbie HancockのCoolなKerboard Soundが耳に残ります。
特にMain Themaはカッコ良く、28年前にある輸入盤屋で\1,000で売られていたAlbumを買おうかどうか迷っていた頃を懐かしく思い出します。

続編も中々良かったんですが（Jimmy Pageの音楽はイマイチだった）、3作目以降はイスラエル人のProducerが荒唐無稽な作品にしてしまい、
Road-Show公開すらされなくなってしまったのが残念！
