Album Details

Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Rs adopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they've previously recorded. Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks. It's the first time they've attempted to write, record, mix, release and support (by touring) an album in the same year. Notoriously known for their laborious writing/recording style and their Icelandic roots, Sigur Rs decided to record an album outside of Iceland for the first time. Recording, mixing and mastering sessions took place in such un-Reykjavik cities as New York (Sear Sound and Sterling Sound), London (Abbey Road and Assault & Battery) and Havana.

かねてからメンバーが告知していた通り、今回の新作は今までになく「アコースティック」な仕上がりだ。
おなじみの轟音ギターや凝った細工を施した幻想的な音はかなり鳴りを潜め、ナチュラルなギターにピアノ、管絃楽器やパーカッションの数々が響き合っている。
何より印象強かったのは、今までは楽器のひとつのように音の波間を流れていたヨンシーの声が「ヴォーカル」としての立ち位置をはっきりとさせていたこと。音同士が共鳴して溶け合うようなお得意の加工も少なく、演奏全体が骨太になった印象を受けた。
なだれ込む轟音にこっそり隠すように光らせていたポップセンスも最大限に引き出されていて、シガー・ロスの作品としてはかつてないほどRock&Popsとしての強い力を持つアルバムである。

その分、これまでの作品に特徴的だった夢うつつを漂うような雰囲気はあまり感じられないように思う。初めて聴いたときは、幸せな夢から覚めてしまったかのような肩透かしを食らったのも事実である。
しかし、シガー・ロスの音楽が持つものは、決して一辺倒の手法でしか表現できないものではないということが、このアルバムで証明されたようにも感じ取れた。これまでの夢うつつから飛び出してもなお、彼らの生み出す音楽には素晴らしい世界が確かに広がっている。ジャケットにあるような晴れやかな開放感と喜びに満ち満ちた世界が、力強く刻まれているのだ。

まどろまずとも、自分たちの生きる世界はこんなにも美しいのだと、教えられたような気がした。
この作品が「転機」となるのか「異色」となるのか。
いずれにしろ、彼らの長く続くであろう音楽活動における偉大なマイルストーンとなることは間違いない。

それは例えていうなら天使である

アイスランドの天上人/Sigur Rosによる5thアルバム。キラキラと軽やかに、有機的な音因子が弾けるオープニング・トラックは、さながらAnimal Collectiveのようなフリー・フォーク。打ち震えるストリングス/チャーミングな各種器楽の音色がこれまでになく強く前面に立ち現れ、Sigur Ros独自の世界へと無邪気にじゃれついていく。階段を駆け上がるようにブラスセクションが上昇するTr.4"Vid Spilum Endalaust"は、GY!BEの"storm"を思わせる華やかなインパクト。アイスランド語と造語(ホープランド語）を交えて幻想的に蕩揺たう前半部から、高速のマーチング・ドラムに乗って高らかに舞い上がる後半部へと展開する10分間の"Festival"で大きなクライマックスを描く。アルバムはそこから一気に静謐さを増し、リリカルなピアノ・フレーズやアコースティックな器楽群、それと睦み合うヨンシーの美声を中心に、時折オーケストラルな彩りを添えつつ終着点へと緩やかに落ちていく。

サウンド・プロダクションとしてはこれまでになく大胆に変化を取り入れているはずなのに、トータル感覚的には前作・前々作にあったようなドラスティックな転換要素を感じなかったのが不思議といえば不思議。他に比べるものの無い独自の世界の中で、無理なく変化していくバンドの姿がハッキリと見える。

私は音楽にメッセージ性なんか一切求めない
タイプなんでその辺は他の人に任せます。
