アバドが2004年にボローニャの若手音楽家を中心に結成した「モーツァルト管弦楽団」と2005年、06年にライヴ収録したモーツァルトの5曲の交響曲を収録。モーツァルト管弦楽団はピリオド楽器の小編成オーケストラで、コンサートマスターをジュリアーノ・カルミニョーラが務めるほか、チェロ首席奏者にマリオ・ブルネロなど要所には実力者を配している。

アバドが指揮したモーツァルトの交響曲というと、1979年にロンドン交響楽団と録音した第40番と第41番が印象に残る。非常にソフトなトーンでおおらかに歌い上げられたモーツァルトだった。

それに比べて今回の録音はまったく印象が異なる。アバドが自らピリオド楽器によるオーケストラを創設したのには、それなりにやりたい表現がいろいろあったのだと納得させられる。ハフナー交響曲冒頭から緩急の起伏を際立たせて、曲の輪郭をくっきり出し、かつ細かい表現技法を駆使してあらゆる手立てを打ってくる。小編成ならではの機動力を存分に活用した攻性のアプローチを連打し、しかもそれが楽団員の自発性に沿っていて、いかにも根っから楽しく演奏しているという感じ。29番の終楽章などもこのうえなく明朗な楽しさに満ちている。他方で、やや硬質なサウンドとなっている印象もあり、ピリオド楽器的な柔らかさはあまり感じない。41番ではその硬さが響きをやや小さくしてしまうところがあると思った。あくまでアバドならではのアプローチということだろうが、ブリュッヘンやガーディナーの演奏とも随分違うので、それに近い演奏をイメージするとだいぶ違うということになるだろう。また、どうしても人工的な「あざとさ」があり、そうであっても求めた個性なのだけれど、そこがちょっと・・・と思う点も残ります。でも、とても興味深い録音であることには間違いない。
