本作は、９２年スタジオ録音・発表の作品を、２４ビット・１９２ｋＨｚリマスタリング、ルビジウム・クロックジェネレーター制御による高精度レーザーカッティングによって音質を高めて再発売したもの。収められている６つのソナタはフラウト・トラヴェルソ（フルートの先祖）のために書かれたものであり、バッハの作品ではない可能性が高い２曲も含まれているが、そんなことはお構いなしにミカラ・ペトリのリコーダーとキース・ジャレットのチェンバロで文句なしの名演を聴かせてくれる。特に現代最高のリコーダー奏者であるミカラのリコーダーの生気溌剌たる演奏と輝くばかりの音色が素晴らしい。それをキースのチェンバロがしっかり支える。クラシックの枠から逸脱する訳ではないし、キースが演奏中にうなったりする訳ではないが、２人のインスピレーションに満ちたインタープレイは見事と言うしかない。キースのクラシックなんてと思っている人や学校の音楽の時間でリコーダー嫌いになった人、あるいはバッハに近寄りがたさを感じている人には、それら偏見を払拭すること請け合いの、実に気持ちよく聴ける作品として本作をお薦めしたい。

ジャレットの左手は通奏低音を奏し、右手は旋律楽器を奏している。バッハの合奏形式におけるトリオ・ソナタの音楽を明確に聴くことができる。またBWV 1030 - 1035は、本来、フルート・トラヴェルソ（横笛）のための作品であるにもかかわらず、リコーダーのヴィルトゥオーゾ Michala Petri と共演したのもジャレットのセンスの良さを感じさせる。なぜなら、そのことによって、作品をより繊細に表現できてる。リコーダー独特の表現が成功していると言うことである。Michala Petri のヴィルトゥオージティも聴き応えあり。ちなみに、私がこのCDを、行きつけのジャズ喫茶のマスターに聴かせたところ、BWV1030のプレストが「ドライヴしている」と、大いにヒットした。そして彼もこのCDを購入するにいたる。

1992年2月28・29日、3月1日キース・ジャレットの自宅にあるケーブライト・スタジオで録音。ヘンデルの録音の2年後。前回プロデューサーはマンフレート・アイヒャーだったが、今回はキース自身とレコーディング・エンジニアのピーター・レンガンーの名がクレジットされている。

曲はオブリガート・チェンバロつきの3つのソナタ(BWV1030-32)と通奏低音つきの3つのソナタ(BWV1033-35)。フラウト・トラヴェルソ(今のフルートの原型)のために作曲された曲だ。これをペトリはブロックフレーテで演奏している。

この中でBWV1031と1033はバッハの曲ではない可能性が高いとのことで新バッハ全集から除かれている。しかしながら『自分の感性に照らして良いものは取り上げる』のスタンスを貫き通しているキースのことであるからして、そういうことには全くこだわらず取り上げている。その辺がキースのキースらしさだなと思う。

キースのハープシコードとペトリのプロックフレーテはここでも息がピッタリで、ヘンデルより暗めのバッハを見事に空間として創りだしている。ヘンデルとともに『癒される』演奏だ。
