帰ってきましたか〜、ありがとうニール・フィン！！思わずそう叫びたくなってしまうcrowded
houseとしては14年ぶりのニューアルバムである。メンバー死去という悲しい出来事もあり、それを乗り越えての復活。中身はといえば80年代の曲調を踏襲したような曲あり、今風の曲調ありとバラエティに富んだ内容になっています。定番のニール・フィンメロディーといっていい#1・#4・#10、ドント・ドリーム・イッツ・オーバーまではいかないけど、そこそこヒットしそうな#2・#3、サムシング・ソー・ストロングのようにさわやかな#6、といったように聴かせどころ満載！なのである。ちなみに#2・#6に元スミスのジョニー・マーがギターで参加しています。
今年は猛暑になるかも知れないという予報があるが、このアルバムを聴いて涼しい気分になり
懐かしい青春時代を思い起こしてみる休日もいいのでは？もちろん80年代ソングを知らない方にもお薦めです。温かい気持ちになれますよ〜。

80年代を代表する名曲のひとつdon't dream it's over。そして90年代英国において絶大な支持を得た2枚の傑作アルバムwoodface、together alone。
crowded houseの作品を聴いたことがあるものにとって、その名前は特別な響きを持つに違いない。良質なポップスを提供してくれる信頼のブランドといってもいい。
オリジナルとしては93年のtoether alone以来14年振りとなる今作も、ブランドに対する期待を裏切らない内容。
better be home soonの郷愁と幻想的なdon't dream it's overのイメージをフォーキーに聴かせる1、メロディ以上にそのニューウエイブなアレンジが初期の彼等らしい3、ビートルズライクな美しいメロディ5、10などは見事な安定感。
さらに、さりげない爽快感の2、johnny marrのロックグルーヴを生かした6、ドラマチックな11、ライトなリズムと女性コーラスの12といった曲は、非常に新鮮に聴こえながらも、その少しひねりの効いたポップセンスは、まさにcrowded house印に他ならないというさすがの仕上がり。
それにしても、crowded houseの14年振りの新作が日本盤未発売とは。輸入盤が安く手に入るのだから特に問題もないのだろうけど、こんなに素晴らしい作品が取り上げられない国というのはちょっと寂しい感じがする。

　2005年3月、オリジナルメンバーのドラマー、ポール・へスターがわずか46歳の若さで亡くなり、クラウデッド・ハウスの再結成は不可能になったと、ボクは勝手に思い込んでいました。しかし、ニールはめげなかった！ポールの死がきっかけとなっての本格的再結成だと、ボクは解釈しています。

　本作品、シングルは4曲ぐらいいけそうなほどの傑作ぶりです。トラック2,3,6,10,12などは、どうやって作曲したのかと思えるほどの出来映え。また、元スミスのギタリスト、ジョニー・マーが3,6の作曲に関わっています。彼は2001年発売の「7Worlds Collide」でも素晴らしい演奏と歌を披露してくれましたよね。

　ポールのやんちゃぶりを思い返すと、心寂しい限りではありますが、一方で、嬉しさいっぱいの気持ちも湧かせる、秀逸な傑作です。然しながら、非常に残念であるのは、本作が、未だ国内盤として発売されていないという現状です（09年04月現在）。

　アルバムとしての充実振りは疑いようがないものの、Crowded〜の国内での知名度は、解散期間が長かったこともあり、ビジネスとしては、採算がとれない、という事情もおありなのでしょう。ですが、果たして、それで済ませて良いのでしょうか。

　ポールが主要ドラマーであった最後のベスト・アルバム『The Very Best Of Crowded House』のライナーノーツでも、4作品目の『Together Alone』でも、Crowded〜を大絶賛して下さった音楽評論家の和田静香さんや山田道成さんなど、もっと自身のビジネス外のことでも、奮迅しては下さらないのでしょうか。レコード会社に頼まれて、唯々、自分の思いの丈をぶつけていれば、それで事足りるとすれば、音楽評論家としての意義はありませんよ。

　音楽に携わる限り、洋楽の裾野を広める貪欲さを越えて、文化を普及するのが、評論家の務めである筈です。それで、ツメの垢ほどのギャラを戴ければ、充分ではありませんか。

　天職で飯を食って生き長らえている方々が、この世にどれ程いらっしゃると思います？みんな、どこかで自身の夢をあきらめて、愛する者を守ろうと、望みもしない業務に必死なのです。そういった、冷厳たる事実を、お二人には、もっと真剣に考えて欲しいですな。
