内容紹介

ジョージ・ベイリイは子供のころから、生まれ故郷の小さなベタフォードの町を飛び出し、世界一周旅行をしたいという望を抱いていた。彼の父は住宅金融会社を経営し、町の貧しい人々に低利で住宅を提供して尊敬を集めていたが、町のボス、銀行家のポッターはこれを目の仇にして事毎に圧迫を加えた。大都会のカレッジを卒業したジョージは懸案の海外旅行に出ようと思ったが、突然、彼の父が過労のため世を去った。ジョージは、株主会議で後継社長に推され、承諾せねばならぬ羽目となった。やがてジョージは幼馴染みのメリイと結婚した。そして豪勢な新婚旅行に出発しようとした時、世界を襲った経済恐慌のため、ジョージの会社にも取付さわぎが起こった。ジョージは旅費として持っていた5000ドルを貧しい預金者たちに払い戻してやり、急場をしのいだ。そのため新婚旅行は出来なくなったが、2人は幸福な結婚生活に入り、次々と4人の子供に恵まれた。住宅会社の業績も着々と上り、それに恐れをなしたポッターはジョージ懐柔策に出たが…

自分の人生が意味あるものなのか？

そんな誰しもが 一度は思い患う時に この映画が処方箋となります。

様々な利害関係の中で 自分のやりたいこともままならず 小さな町の中での生活を余儀なくされる主人公。生きる意味を見失ってしまうところで、この映画はその性質をガラリと変えてしまいます。

ラストシーンは、必見。ここに至るまでの物語のエッセンスがギュッと詰まったラストシーンは すれた観客にも感動を残します。

水野某氏の「映画ってホントにいいもんですね」のセリフが 似合う 映画だと思います。

映画は最高です。
自分の中のベストムービー上位にランクインします。
でもこのＤＶＤはダメです。
何故って字幕に誤字があります。
せっかくのいい雰囲気が台無しです。
買うなら値段は高いけど、他メーカーの物を買いましょう。
音質とかもそっちのほうがいいですよ。

フランク・キャプラ監督によるハートフル・コメディーです。アメリカではクリスマス映画の定番中の定番として毎年クリスマスになるとテレビで放映されているそうです。

フランク・キャプラ監督というと、厳しい現実から目を背け、非現実的でご都合主義な、正直者は必ず報われるような甘い世界観を描いた人、などと批判されることがあります（キャラメル・コーンにかけてキャプラ・コーンなどと呼ばれたり…）。

本作も、設定だけを見れば、誠実で真面目な銀行家を描いたストーリーになっていますが、本作を制作する前に、キャプラは国家からの、第二次世界大戦の記録映画を製作せよ、という命令により、戦場で数々の余りにも血なまぐさい現実を見てきていました。それでも、キャプラ監督が再び人間の素晴らしさを描いたこの戦後復帰第一作からは、『スミス氏都へ行く』や『オペラハット』に通じるストーリーでありながら人の善性に対するより強い信念のようなものを感じさせられました。

また、主演のジェームス・スチュワートも、従軍したハリウッドの俳優としては最高ランクの、海軍提督まで上り詰めた英雄でありながら、世間の人々に悲しい戦争を思い出させたくないという理由から、この輝かしい経歴を映画の宣伝に利用しないことを条件にこの映画に出演しました。映画内の役柄でも、彼自身は難聴の為に徴兵を免れた、という設定になっています。

公開当時は興行的にも評論家からの評価的にも失敗し、製作した映画会社が倒産してしまったという作品ながら、現代の米国での映画ランキングで度々一位に輝いているのは、このような背景もあるのだと思います。

特典映像は無し、日本語字幕付きの本編のみです。
