1985年の録音。今聴いてみても思うが、当時はかなり斬新なブルックナーだったのではないだろうか。確か、この頃はブルックナーの録音も今の様に大量にあったわけではなく、日本ではシューリヒトの録音の評価が高かったと思う。私もシューリヒトの録音を聴いていた。そこには確かに枯淡ともいえる味わいある音楽があり、鄙びた山陰の温泉のような雰囲気があった。これを聴く一方で、何かもっと別の方法のものを聴いてみたいという思いも強くあった。

そんな背景で登場したのがこのショルティ盤である。これには驚いた。これまで漠然と「ブルックナーはこういうもんだ」と思っていたものが、いきなり思いもかけない方法で語られる、その鮮度の強烈だったこと。純粋にスコアと対峙して、ひたすら深くスコアを読み尽くしたショルティあってこその演奏と言えると思う。今聴いてみても、その鮮度がまったく失われていないことに驚嘆してしまう。とにかく辛口で、人によってはとっつきにくいかもしれないが、大変な名演である。強靭な精神力によって引き締められた合奏の持続は息苦しくなるほどの緊迫感！。静寂の果てしなさ、音色の緻密さ、そして神がかり的な迫力。ブラスの壮大な響きには抗いがたい強烈な引力を感じてしまう。実際、この録音に出会って、私はブルックナーという作曲家の作品がいよいよ本当に好きになったのだ。（そして今も。。。すごい持続力だ）。この演奏は、この曲の神秘性をさらに突き抜けた領域にある。
