サンフランシスコから流れてきた流れ者のフランクは、安食堂を経営する男ニックと知り合い彼の店で働き始める。フランクはニックの美しい若妻コーラと恋に落ち、2人はニックの殺害を計画。だがその試みは失敗し、フランクはロサンゼルスで仕事に就くが、命を取り留めたニックに連れ戻される。コーラは再び夫殺しをフランクに持ちかけ、二人は自動車事故に見せかけてニックを殺害するが・・・。ハードボイルド小説の大家ジェイムズ・M・ケインは、ルース・スナイダーという女性が愛人と共謀して夫を殺害するという実際に起きた事件にヒントを得て、34年に処女小説『郵便配達は二度ベルを鳴らす』を発表。この不倫、殺人、詐欺がテーマの過激な小説は絶賛を浴び、34年のベストセラーの一冊となった。しかし、道徳観の欠如した物語は当時の観客にはあまりにも衝撃的だったため、小説は長い間映画化されずに倉庫に眠っていた。数々の苦労の末に完成した映画は大きな成功を収め、今でも映画史に残る佳作として人々に愛されている。

ロードムービー男と非ロードムービー女
が接点を持つとこんなドラマが出来上がるのか。
リメイクも舞台も繰り返されている名作中の名作。
多分、女優業をしている女性なら、一度はこの役
やりたいだろうなぁ。
白黒の方が乾いた感じが強く出ていて、良。
映画ファンなら、絶対に観ておかねばならない。

　流れ者のジョン・ガーフィールドと不倫の妻ラナ・ターナーの顛末を描いて、サスペンスに富む作品である。ふたりは共謀して夫を殺す。一度失敗して二度目に自動車事故にみせかけて目的を達する。映画はここからおもしろくなる。
　ガーフィールドは軽薄な若者を演じて説得力があった。ただ、ラナ・ターナーは男を引きつけるに十分な容姿をみせつけたが、演技は一本調子で、ストーリーの流れを害した。これが迫真の演技だったら、同情できないふたりではあっても、さらに悲劇的な要素がまして衝撃的な映画になっていただろう、とおもう。

　冴えない中年男に美人の若妻。なんでこんな男に、こんな魅力的な女性が……。
　最初はただの恋愛物かと思って観ていたが、どうしてどうして。殺人劇、裁判劇、心理の裏をかいたあの手この手の駆け引き、突発する問題、二転三転する物語展開に目が離せない。
　完全犯罪の計画が、猫の感電から狂い始め、殺人に至るまで紆余曲折。殺そうと思い、死ぬなと願い、迷い、また殺意が湧き起こる。その後二人の関係も、愛し合い、憎み合い、大きく揺れ動き、また愛し合う。沖へ向かってどこまでも泳ぎ続ける男と女の運命は――。
　人の道に外れた愛が成就するはずもないが、どこでその終止符が打たれるのか。裁判劇以降、最後に神罰が下るぎりぎりの瞬間まで、汚れた二人を応援したいような、逃げるだけ逃げ切ってもらいたいような、変な気分にさせられる。主人公が郵便配達の鳴らすベルの比喩を用いて人生を語るとき、ようやくその迷いから醒め、心の平静を得られた気がした。
　この作品は人間の“業(ごう)”というものを、どきどき、やきもきしながら我が事のように感じさせてくれる、最高のサスペンスであると思う。
