　ベートーヴェンのピアノソナタにハマるきっかけとなったのが、プレゼントされたピアノソナタ第8番悲愴、第13番、第14番月光の収録されたCDでした。ギレリスのピアノは、まさに私がベートーヴェンに抱くイメージそのものでした。ダイナミックな打鍵、冷たく硬質なピアノの音が、行き場のない激情をピアノに叩きつけるベートーヴェンの姿をそのものを体現していたのです。ギレリスの虜になった私がすぐにこのCDを買ったのはいうまでもありません．
　このCDでとくにお勧めしたいのが、テンペストとワルトシュタインです．
　まずは、激情を胸に秘めつつ、現実と非現実の狭間をさまよい（これはバレンボイムの受け売りです）苦悩するベートーヴェンの姿が彷彿とされるテンペスト第一楽章。しかし白眉は第三楽章．さりげない演奏のなかで、ベートーヴェンの哀しみが、なんと切なく美しく浮かび上がっていることか！．いつかはこんな風に弾けるようになりたいモノです．
　次に、男性的なベートーヴェン・ピアノソナタの中では女性的とも思えるワルトシュタイン．軽快な疾走感、雄大かつドラマチックな展開で、なんとも爽快な気分に浸ることのできるでしょう．
　ギレリスの演奏には、迷い、不自然さ、曖昧さといったものが一切なく、過剰な感情移入による破綻もありません．シンプルといえばシンプル．しかし計算し尽くされた全くスキのない演奏だと思います．そして全ての曲に一貫した哲学を感じます．まさにベートーヴェン・ピアノソナタのベンチマーク、ゴールドスタンダードとすべき名盤．先に挙げたCDとセットで購入されることをお勧めします。

ギレリスは、鉄拳でピアノを弾くという間違ったイメージを持っていた。バックハウス、アラウ、ケンプ、ポリーニ、ブーニン、ホロヴィッツを聞き比べて、ギレリスの透明度の高い決勝のような演奏のとりこになった。強く打鍵する時はもちろんあるが、それも非常に透明度の高いもので、心が洗われる演奏が聴ける。バックハウスの全集がムラがある、ベーゼンドルファーでの演奏などスタインウェイのギレリスと一概には比べられないが、バックハウスの方が上だとは感じるが、ギレリスのあの音作りは、全く別物と考えて、両方持つと良い。協奏曲では、指揮者のセルとギレリスの競演がおもしろいのではないだろうか。ばら売りよりは、ギレリスの残したピアノソナタ集でまとめて買う方がよい。1枚聞くとまた次が聞きたくなるから。

テンペストは、比較的ゆっくりとした演奏で、とても正しく演奏されていた印象を受けた。ワルトシュタインは、長年アラウの演奏に聴きなれていたのだが、比較すると、これまた、正しく丁寧な演奏と印象だ。アラウの方が少し荒々しい演奏だ。個人的には、アラウの演奏の方が好きだが、このピアニストの演奏は、練習するのには、模範的な、お手本となるのではないだろうか。
