   「ウルトラマンレオ」が制作・放映された1974年から75年にかけて、我が国はオイルショックという未曾有の衝撃を経験した。その影響はドラマの撮影現場にも及び、特に多額の予算を要する特撮TVドラマは制作費の縮小を余儀なくされ、「ウルトラマンレオ」では、特撮部分のスケールダウンをカバーするためドラマ部分の充実が命題とされた。
   VOL.5に収録された4つのエピソードは、「見よ！ウルトラ怪奇シリーズ」と題し、夏休みの放映となった作品群だが、スタート当初の特訓パターンが薄味になった分、もとより希薄だったSF性が強まるかといえばそうではなく、地方都市を舞台にした怪獣退治話が漫然と続くばかりで、ストーリーにはさしたる工夫が見られない。またドラマ部分のテンションがダウンしたことで、特撮部分での怪獣造型のまずさ、侵略演出の稚拙さが露呈。設定部分に大きく関わらない、いわゆるエピソード編は、そもそも脚本家や監督の個性、趣味性が楽しめるものだが、この4作品を見る限り、逆にスタッフの迷いが見えてしまう。（斉藤守彦）

この巻あたりから、視聴者の声を反映させて、ほのぼの路線へと路線変更されています。
第一話から続いた「特訓編」に対して、視聴者から、あまり良い反応が得られなかったのが
その理由だとか・・・。いわく、「ダンが怖い」「あまりにも暴力的すぎる」などなど。
特訓編の好きな私にとっては、残念でなりません。

それでも私がこの巻を買ったのは、特典映像として、真夏竜さんへのインタビューが
あったからです。

ウルトラマンメビウスでも、その熱い勇姿を見せてくれた真夏さんが語る
当時の思い出ばなしは、なかなか興味深いものがありました。

今の真夏竜さんの姿を堪能したい人にはおすすめの第五巻です。

第５巻は４巻に続き夏休み怪奇シリーズです。第十七話は若い女性の血を吸うウルフ星人です。この話ではゲンの所属するスポーツセンター職員猛とそのフィアンセ冴子が主役です。しかしこともあろうに冴子にウルフ星人が憑依してしまいました。猛の命がけの訴えに果たしてレオはどうやって冴子を救うのか・・この話では男女の愛がテーマのウルトラシリーズには珍しい作品です。第十八話は吸血コウモリ怪獣バットンです。ＭＡＣは上空漂う無数の巨大コウモリを退治します。そのころ地上では百子とトオル、カオルが草むらで傷だらけの女を救い、こともあろうに自宅に連れて帰ります。トオルは怪獣と疑ったのに・・おかげでみんなえらい目にあってしまいます。この話ではレオのとんでもない武器が見所です。びっくり！第十九話は北海道ロケシリーズです。ゲンは北海道に百子、トオル、カオルらと遊びにいきます。そこでは海坊主の民間伝承を隠れ蓑にボーズ星人が民間人を殺戮していました。ゲンはＭＡＣに連絡してダンがやってきますが、久々にダンはムチを使ってゲンに怪獣倒しの特訓をします。怪獣の死に際が見所の変わった作品です。第二十話は怪獣ドギューと少年ボックです。ドギューに追われボックが北海道に墜落します。それを見たゲンとダンは北海道へ向かいます。そのころ北海道ではドギューの仕業で殺人事件がおこっていました。見所はドギューに殺された熊の子供を世話するボックの献身的な姿です。しかし、本物の小熊を連れて歩き回るって・・今なら絶対危険すぎてダメになるでしょうから、ある意味凄い時代だなと実感できる作品です。あとレオと怪獣のやりとりはコントみたいでけっこう笑えると思います。この５巻はいかにも子供が喜びそうな仕上がりの作品が多いのですがその中にも愛と優しさを説く秀作ぞろいのＤＶＤだと思います。

この巻から「怪奇シリーズ」が始まっています。初期のゲンは他の隊員と対立が多かったですが、だんだん他の隊員とも仲良くなっています。ゲンもだんだん成長してきた感じもしました。久し振りのダン隊長による特訓。北海道ロケ。見どころも大きくなってきています。
また、新しくMACの副隊長佐藤大介役に元スリー・ファンキーズの手塚しげおさんがMAC全滅までご出演されています。そしてこの巻の目玉、真夏竜さんのインタビューも収録されています。
