   「ウルトラマンレオ」が従来のウルトラ・シリーズと違うのは、これまでのストーリー・フォーマットに、新しく「成長するウルトラマン」を盛り込んだ点にある。スタート当初のエピソードでは、怪獣・宇宙人との対決に敗れたレオが、モロボシ・ダン隊長の特訓で技を会得し、勝利する様子が繰り返し描かれている。
   問題は、それらのフォーマットのワンパターン化が早かったこと。そしてダンがレオ（おおとりゲン）を鬼の形相でしごく、ハイテンションなドラマ部分に対して、特撮、特に怪獣・宇宙人の造型から緊張感が感じられないという、アンバランスさが目立ってきたことにある。
   第5話「泣くな！おまえは男の子」では、3話で父親をツルク星人に殺されたトオル少年を登場させ、ゲンに葛藤を与える役回りを果たす。宇宙人に殺された遺族を、このような形でドラマにからめる試みは、これまでのシリーズには見られなかったことである。また第8話では、ダンによるゲンの特訓というパターンから脱し、十貫なる僧侶が登場。ゲンにさりげなく極意を伝授する他、笑いを誘う故・藤木悠の軽快な演技、レオ初の光線技の披露など、見せ場もふんだん。（斉藤守彦）

２巻目も熱い話（というか、ゲンが苦難に見舞われる話）のオンパレード。
この巻に収録されている全４話は、より、レオに出てくる星人や怪獣が、「ゲンが特訓を施され、強くなる」為の
布石でしかないことが明確になってます（けして非難じゃないんですよ。どういう物語を形作りたいのかが分かりやすい）。
地球に襲い来る星人の意図がほとんど分からず、カーリー星人などは、やってることは１巻目第３話のツルク星人と
ほぼ同じ通り魔！
観てる方もツッコミ入れつつ、その特訓が早く観たいという気にさせられるのが「レオ」の不思議なところ。
最初から無敵なのではなく、強くなる過程をちゃんと見せるって展開は燃えますよ。
武道経験者でレオファンって結構いるんじゃないかな？
そして特訓と同じくらい胸を熱くするのがダン隊長の『漢意気』入りまくりな叱咤の台詞の数々！
隊長、そこまで言うか！？そこまでやるか！？のシーン連発ですが、そこがシビレます（これが受け付けない・・という人もいるでしょうが）
厳しい台詞がビシビシ飛びますが、またいいなぁと思うのが、ダン隊長役の森次さんの目の演技なんです。
台詞を言わないシーンでも目で語るというのが本当に上手いと思う。
特訓に関しては、隊長がジープでゲンをひき殺すが如く追いかけ回すのがもっとも有名ですが（ゲン、逃げるなぁぁ〜！！！）、
７話のケンドロスの回の特訓も秀逸です（ダン隊長の台詞も秀逸！）。
個人的には７話での特訓が一番好きかな。決戦シーンもカッコイイです。
第８話に登場する十貫坊は、一話のみの人物になるのは惜しい程。

この巻のオススメは第６話、「男だ！燃えろ！」です。
等身大のカーリー星人が何気なく車を追っかけてくるカットは本気で恐いです。
次々殉職していく名も無き隊員を冷静に「ダメか」･･･というダン隊長。
ツッコミどころは多いです。
しかし最高のツッコミどころは特訓終盤にあります。
しかし最近不条理につっこませて終わってしまう作品が多いですが、
これは違う！見終わった後、熱く燃えるものがふつふつと沸き上がるはずです。
それはあなたが実際に見て感じて下さい。

背表紙の背景、今までのデジタルウルトラシリーズ作品では左→右で揃う仕様だったのに、
今回のＤＶＤ「ウルトラマンレオ」では右→左に並べる仕様になっているんですね！
ＤＶＤ「ウルトラマンタロウ」シリーズの隣に、「レオ」１〜５巻を並べてみましたが。。。甚だ不自然です。
なぜ統一仕様にしてくれなかったのか。。。？？？
その点だけが不満でした。
