彼のロック・スターとしてのランキングへの耽溺に息が詰まりそうになったのか、ジャック・ホワイトは、このスーパーグループという奇行に足を踏み入れた。ちらっと見た限りでは、ホワイトの消せない存在感が返って他のメンツを見せているバンドになっているといえなくもない。ザ・ラコンターは、どうもそういうバンドである。デトロイトのソングライター、ブレンダン・ベンソン、ジャック・ローレンス、そしてパトリック・キーラーとチームを組み、リズムセクションは、コネチカットのバンドである、ザ・グリーンホーンズが担当。ホワイトはこのアルバムBroken Boy Soldiersがチームみんなのものであるように、他のメンツと異なりながらもがんばっている。ベンソンの青写真に従って、60年代のラジオポップスのようなSteady as She Goesで始まって、レコードはきちんきちんと前進してゆく。タイトル・トラックは、ミドル・イースト風のホワイトがロバート・プラントさながらに吠えたけり、ローレンスとキーラーはコーラスのいいIntimate Secretaryと楽観的なアコースティック・ロックYellow Sunをやってのける。多々あるオールスターバンドと同じように、ザ・ラコンターズも同じ道をたどるかもしれない。しかし、この素晴らしく本物なデビューは記憶にとどめておきたい。
Album Details
The Raconteurs have been forced into a name change in Australia because the moniker is already being used by another Aussie jazz band. In a statement, Benson and White said "the Raconteurs name was already taken by a jazz band, to make things easier, and in the spirit of espionage and subversion, we have decided to become the saboteurs in australia only."The band is Jack White (guitars/vocals/keys), Brendan Benson (guitars/vocals/keys), Jack Lawrence (bass) and Patrick Keeler (drums).
