レゲエのスター歌手を夢見る青年アイヴァンは、田舎からなけなしの金を握りしめて首都キングストンへやってきた。すぐに文無しになってしまうアイヴァンだが、何とか待望のレコーディングのチャンスを得て、自作曲「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」を吹き込む。マリファナ売買に身をやつし、お尋ね者として有名人になったアイヴァンの曲「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」はヒットチャートを駆け上り、カリスマ的人気を獲得するが……。

ジミー・クリフ、ザ・メイタルズなど初期レゲエを代表するミュージシャンが出演し、全篇にレゲエをフィーチャーしたジャマイカ初の長篇劇映画。ゲットーの熱気、マリファナにあふれた"リアルジャマイカ"を描いた本作は、本国はもちろん世界中でカルト的人気を獲得し、レゲエを世界に広める決定的な火付け役となった。

なんといいっても、ジミークリフがふたつのgunを持って逃げるストーリーなんです。ただ逃げるだけでない痛快具合が、悪って言葉が似合う今にもないストリート大胆さ

　ボブ・マーリーより先の世代であるジミー・クリフは、この映画で高級自動車窃盗を繰り返して荒稼ぎをする「ルードボーイ」と呼ばれたギャングを演じています。二丁拳銃を手に、次々に強盗を繰り返すクリフの姿は爽快感があります。
　映画のラスト。彼は警察に追いつめられ、キューバへの逃亡を図ります。「革命家になるか」とうそぶく彼は、しかし、白砂青松の海岸で警察と銃撃戦を行い、射殺されます。その哀れな死の場面が突然映画館の中に変わります。観客たちが、必死で応戦するクリフの姿を見て大笑いします。この映画で、「ルードボーイの末路はこんなものだ。もっとポジティブな生き方を考えろ」とクリフは本物のルードボーイたちに訴えているようです。

実は主題歌もKeith Richardのソロ・シングルで聴いたのが最初。（レゲエ・ファンの皆さんすみません。）

カッコいいその曲がジミー・クリフ作のカバーということを知り、サントラ（ここまでは早かった）、そして映画にたどり着くまで20年位かかりました。（この映画、昔はそう簡単に観ることができなかったのです。）

待った甲斐がありました。70年代前半のゲットーの感じが伝わってきます。音楽もCDを聴くだけでは味わえない臨場感。

買取が嫌なら失せろ

「歌手（スター）」と「ドラッグのディーラー」が同列のサクセス。これって現代のゲットーでもあまり変わらないかも。（ま、今の日本にはあてはまりませんが。）
