   足を骨折し目下のところ車椅子生活を強いられているカメラマンのジェフ（ジェームズ・スチュアート）は、退屈しのぎにアパートの窓から望遠カメラでのぞき見をしていたために、いつしか殺人事件に巻き込まれてしまう。
   コーネル・ウールリッチの短編小説を名匠アルフレッド・ヒッチコック監督が映画化した、今やサスペンス映画の代名詞といっても過言ではないほどの名作。主人公が身動きのとれない状態であることを逆手にとってのさまざまなスリルの趣向と演出が、素晴らしいまでに緊迫した効果を与えてくれている。たとえば彼がのぞき見している向かいのアパートの住人たちは、一切の台詞が主人公まで聞こえてこないので、どこかパントマイム的なユーモアが伴われるが、それが事件の発覚とともに無気味な体裁へと変貌していくうまさ。主人公の恋人役として登場のグレース・ケリーの美しさも特筆ものである。（的田也寸志）

ヒッチコックの好きな鳥瞰的ショットが初めから終わりまでという設定（当然なことで主人公が車椅子で動けないから視界が限られてしまう）が、窓からのぞいている主人公（ジェームズ・スチュアート）と我々を実に上手くミステリーの世界に引き込んでいく。犯人（映画では犯人かどうかは明確には分からない）は後に「アイアンサイド」シリーズで名をあげるレイモンド・バー。テレビで彼のファンなら嬉しい再会。グレース・ケリーは美しいの一言に尽きる。ジェームズ・スチュアーが動けない代わりに彼女が手足となって動くからかえってハラハラドキドキ度が増幅されてしまう。設定がニュー・ヨークのグリニッジ・ヴィレッジということで面白そうな人が集まっているのもこの映画の覗き見趣味に花を添えている。

　この価格なら良心的です。人の好みはそれぞれ。「めまい」も捨てがたいのですけれど・・・しかし、これがヒッチ先生の「ｔｈｅ Ｂｅｓｔ」です。少なくともテクニック的にはそうです。表現の手段としての映像に興味のある人、必見。いわゆる活動写真好きほど、この映画を高く評価するのではないでしょうか。サイレント映画としても観ても面白い。カメラワーク、文句なしです。構図、向き（視線）、切り替え、ズーミング、いちいちピタ、ピタと決まります。もうたまりません。

言わずと知れた名画で、封切りの頃から10回も見た人も少なくないと思います。
私はそのひとりなんですが、さすがはUniversalのDVD、ビスタサイズで画質も立派です。
どうやら修復がなされているようです。というのは、54分ものメーキングがあってその事に触れているのです。
このメーキング、撮影当時のエピソードも満載で、これだけでもファンは食い入るように見つめてしまうでしょう。
中身の印刷物などは省かれていますが980円なんて申し訳ないほどの充実したDVDです。
