Wal-Martはアメリカの全米最大規模のディスカウント・スーパーで、「どこよりも安い」「いつでも安い」といった合い言葉でもって急成長を遂げている。 このドキュメンタリーはWal-Martの経営戦略が、 1. 地域コミュニティを崩壊し、2.社員を極端に搾取し、3.社内における女性差別、人種差別を助長し、4.国家の税金を私的な利益拡大のために利用している上に、5.産業後進国における人権侵害を助長し、6.犯罪を増加させ、7.環境を破壊していることを告発する。

Wal-Martの経営戦略の負の側面（特に1と5）については、これまでも多くの批判がされてきているが、この映画が特出している理由の一つは、今日企業が成長の限界を超えてさらに成長していくために必要な市場経済の構造の変化を、アメリカにおける伝統的な自由主義的市場経済信仰（ロック的な労働観などの倫理的側面も含）と比較しつつ明確化した点である。また、Wal-Martの繁栄は、単に生産コストを削減し流通を効率化するといった従来の方法だけではなく（それはもうある意味あたりまえのことであって）、そこからさらに一歩進んで、アメリカ国内の労働市場に第三国的な状況を作り出し、保持していくための巧みな搾取の組織化によって支えられていることを示すことで、映画は、現代的な企業と労働者の権力構造、労働者の主体化の問題などを問いかけ、また、Wal-Martのやり方が、近い将来、資本主義経済の内側における限界を乗り越える一つのスタンダードとして定着していくであろうことを示唆する。それが意味するのは、資本主義のさらなる発展なのだろうか。それとも……

細部に編集上の粗さは見られるが、内容の詰まった作品である。
