【プロフィール】
1963年頃にカリフォルニアで結成されたダニー&ザ・メモリーズが、6人組のロケッツに発展。そのライヴを観たニール・ヤングの要望でアルバムに起用されたダニー・ウィットン(g)、ビリー・タルボット(b)、ラルフ・モリーナ(ds)で69年に結成。71年『クレイジー・ホース』でデビュー。以後ニールとの共演と並行した独自の活動を続ける。また映画『イヤー・オブ・ザ・ホース』でもニールと共演。共演作は『ニール・ヤング・ウィズ・クレイジー・ホース』『ZUMA』『ラスト・ネヴァー・スリープス』ほか。

僕にとって、ニールヤングの最高傑作です。
特に２曲目「See The Sky About To Rain」は海辺で聴きたいものです。
ニールヤングをあまり知らない人にも是非聴いてもらいたいですね。
ちなみにジャケットも最高！

ハーヴェストから２年ぶり、７４年に発表されたスタジオ録音の作品。前年にクレイジー・ホースのダニー・ウィットンが死亡してニール自身もそうとう落ち込んだというから、その状態からの回復途上の作品ということになろうか。一般にニールが充電を終えて７０年代後半の傑作連発が始まるのは翌年、特にＺＵＭＡからと思われがちだが、本作を忘れないでほしい。派手さはないが、繰り返し聴けば聴くほど味が出てくる作品が本作。アコースティックな面もエレクトリックの面（といっても後の轟音路線ではないが）も備え、ハーヴェストまでの音楽を総括し、彼の更なる飛躍の色々な種というか彼の世界の奥深さを確認できる名作である。本作で展開する音楽の多彩さを反映して、バック・ミュージシャンはベン・キース等ストレイゲーターズ系、ビリー・タルボット等クレイジー・ホース系を中心に（両系が共演している曲が多い）、一部の曲にはザ・バンドからリック・ダンコ、レヴォン・ヘルムをゲストに迎えている。ヴォーカル、バンジョー、ドブロだけの曲もある。個人的には、ＺＵＭＡの「ドント・クライ・ノー・ティアーズ」の先駆けとなる明るさが魅力の「ウォーク・オン」、穏やかな名曲「アバウト・トゥ・レイン」、抑制されたエレキ・ギターが印象的なタイトル曲、アコースティック・サウンドで静かに締め括るラスト２曲がお薦め。後年、ニールは新しい音を模索するとき「バック・トゥ・ザ・ビーチ」と発言するが、それも頷ける。

　ニール・ヤングのファン以外はきっとこのアルバムに手を出すことはないでしょうから、内容の紹介など必要ないのかも。ザ・バンドのメンバーとの共演、発表当初はきわめて評判がわるかったものの、徐々にファンを中心に再評価を受け、CD化がつよく望まれていた名盤です。冒頭の「ウォーク・オン」が、ジャケットのこの明るいイメージをすべて物語っています。エレキを使用していても印象は「アフター・ザ・ゴールド・ラッシュ」、「ハーヴェスト」そして「カムズ・ア・タイム」系のソフト・サウンド系に入ると思いますが、わたくしは少なくとも「カムズ・ア・タイム」よりはこちらが気に入っています。
　というか、本作を評価しない人はあまりファンとはいえないような気がする・・
