Album Description

A New York City native and University of Miami graduate, jazz guitarist and composer Jonathan Kreisberg backed a long list of top jazz professionals before breaking out on his own. Unearth, featuring eight original compositions, is Jonathan's fourth CD as a leader. He is accompanied by Scott Wendholt on trumpet, Aaron Goldberg on piano, Matt Penman on bass, and Anthony Pinciotti on drums. When not on tour, Jonathan and his trio perform each Wednesday at La Lanterna in Greenwich Village. This enhanced CD also includes a Mel Bay Records interview, artist biography, photo gallery and discography.

ギター雑誌にインタビューが載っていたので購入してみた。この作品はピアノとホーン入りのクインテットの編成となっている。Jonathan Kreisbergのプレイは正確でタッチもよく上手いプレイヤーだと思った。タイム感はパット・マルティーノに近い感じで端正である。作品としては曲がなんとなく習作くさいというかイマイチだった。1曲目の「MINOR LEAPS」なんかはコルトレーンの「ジャイアント・ステップ」の変奏みたいな曲だし、他の曲もなんとなく無機質というか、メロディーが印象に残らない。メセニーは大作曲家だし、ジョンスコも初期は格好良い曲を作っていた。（最近のジョンスコの曲はインプロヴィゼイションのための素材といった感じで、あまり作曲に力を入れていない気がする･･･）曲が良くなければ一般的な人気を得るのは難しい気がする。これは最近の若いギタリストに共通していることだとも思うが、ギターは上手いがオリジナル曲がつまらないということは否めない。このアルバムは全曲オリジナルだからそのような印象であるが、スタンダードなんか演奏しているアルバムだったら、結構楽しめたのかも。

正月に、マンハッタンのLa Lanternaというカフェでライブ聴きました。良かったですよ。Giant Stepsの変奏っていうReviewがありましたが、確かにそんな感じですね。でも、大昔のトリスターノの作曲法みたいで、こういうアプローチは懐かしくも新鮮です。まぁ若手じゃなければ恐れ多くてこんなマネはできないでしょうネ。ギター弾きの皆さんは、Minor Leapsのテーマをコピーしてみましょう。このCDを最初に聴いた時のワタシがそうだったのですが、採譜を始めたらなんだかムズムズしてきて、結局10年ぶりくらいに（テーマだけですが）完コピしてました。でもって、左手がフレミングの左手の法則の形で固まってしまいました♪　なんにせよ、とても達者なギターなので聴いているうちに、自然にギターに手が伸びると思います。
