『()』以来、約3年ぶりとなる2005年発表の4thアルバム。全体的にヘヴィだった前作に比べ「楽しめるもの」を意識して制作。無機質なサウンドの中にある独特の温もりは健在。EMI移籍後第1弾アルバム。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

誰も足を踏み入れたことのない土地を覆っている大気の色彩、香り、動きを想像し、そこで育まれている動植物の様相に思いを馳せる。感覚を、既存の認識の外に拡張したいという願望を音にする。そうした試みは、ちょっとした慢心で、すぐに有り体の表現に堕してしまう。歪んだギター音で刻むリズムを重ねて全体にエコーを多めにかける。ところどころにふわふわゆらゆらした歌を加え、唐突に大音量の音の断片を挿入する。イメージの拡大、と一口に言っても、当然、それを行なう者の中にある創造力の強度と柔軟性によるわけである。貧弱な土壌に豊富な収穫はない。見たことのない風景、吸い込んだことのない空気、触れたことのない樹皮、感じたことのない喜びや痛み、それらを描きたい、と念じ続けることはそう安楽ではない。シガー・ロスはしかしその試み、鍛練から逃れようとはしていなかった。頭の中で鳴り響いている音のスケールが日々拡大していたであろうことがわかる新作である。 漠然としたはるかかなたのイメージをくっきりと描く力強い表現。弦楽器や管楽器群を、ちりばめるのではなく、曲の構造の中でしっかりとした場所を作り出し配置している。しかもそれらが効果音的な(サンプリング的ともいえる)導入ではなく、音の色彩の立体感のバランスの中で確かな響きをもたらすものになっている。シンプルなリフレインがゆっくり多彩に拡張していく様は、蟻がエサを運んだり土を溶かしたり積み上げて巣を作り上げ子孫を生み出していく営みを思わせる。リフレインの中で音像は万華鏡のように変化していく。場面展開にトリッキーなところはなく、物語が章を重ねていくように(ところどころに小さなエピソードをまじえながら)進行する。気がつくと右も左も記憶にない空間に置き去りにされていたような快感。奥ゆきの心地よい音作り。オーディオ装置を思わずグレードアップしたくなる、イケナイ誘惑に満ちてもいる。 (湯浅 学) --- 2005年10月号

『Agaetis Byrjun』でアイスランド国外にもその名を世に知らしめ、『()』で独自のサウンドを極めたSigur Rosの４枚目です。
ピアノとストリング中心の幻想的で神秘的な音に大きな変化はないですが、前作『()』では全曲が無題だったためにお互いの曲の個性が曖昧になった反省か、今度は全曲にタイトルがついてますし、シングル向きの曲が増えたかな？

「言葉は分からないけれど、綺麗な歌」
友人に聞かせても、親に聞かせても、小さな子供に聞かせてもみんなから必ずこの言葉が帰ってくる。
ポストロック好きよりもむしろ普通の音楽ファンに聞いてもらいたい。
彼らには素晴らしいアート性を感じるし、良い意味での崇高さもある。
その一方で誰にでも理解できる歌の普遍性を彼らは持っている。
2005年のフジロックで60歳ぐらいの初老の夫婦が彼らのライブを見ながら、「綺麗な曲を歌う人らやね」と僕の隣で言っていたことが今でも忘れられない。

エレキギターの音が、大方の大人にとって騒音だった時代に
この作品を持っていって聴かせてみたい。
好き嫌いはあっても、ただうるさいとは言わないんじゃないだろうか。
そう思ってしまう程、このひずみが美しく聞こえる。
