『晩春』の後、初めて他社で撮った『宗方姉妹』で不慣れな想いをした小津安二郎監督が、再びホームグラウンドの松竹に戻って撮った作品。物語は『晩春』と似ていて、北鎌倉を舞台に、婚期を逃しかけている娘（原節子）をめぐって心配する兄夫婦（笠智衆＆三宅邦子）や両親（菅井一郎＆東山千栄子）らの、どこにでもある日常のエピソードが羅列され、やがて娘は嫁いでいく。
ここではサイレント時代や『晩春』以降の小津作品を担当し、名コンビと謳われた野田高梧の脚本の妙や、それに応じたセリフの間の絶妙な取り方などが、ユーモアを交えながら捉えられている。一方で小津は本作に関して「無常や輪廻を描きたかった」とも発言。キネマ旬報ベスト・テン第1位。小津マニアの中には、これを彼のベスト1とする声も多い。（的田也寸志）
