それをいいと思うか悪いと思うかは価値観の問題なのでおいといて，そういうものが本作の中に充満しているのはたしかでしょう．"American fool"でブレークを果たし，知名度も文句なしのところまでアップ．覚えやすいようにということで改名させられていたJohn Cougarに，本名であるMellencampを加えてリリースされた本作．そういうこともあいまって，自分の表現したいこととセールスがいいバランスで結びついたのが本作といえるでしょう．

"R. O. C. K. in the USA"には，まさにアメリカでロックしているアーティストとしての衿持があらわれているし，シングルとしてかなりヒットした．本作のリリースされた当時(1985年)のアメリカの景気はかなり悪かった．このヒット曲も，そういう世相の中で自分達の誇りを取り戻そうという意味合いがあったわけだが，"Scarecrow"の嘆きや，"Small town"の詞の内容にも，今立っているところに根を張って生きることの誇りが反映されている．Band AIDなどの流れで，アメリカの農家を救おうってんでFarm AIDなんてのをやって，彼が積極的に出ていたのを思い出す．

R. E. M.などで知られていたDon Gehmanをプロデューサに迎えたのが，本作の特徴と言えるでしょう．Kenny Aronoffのめっちゃ歯切れのいいドラムスの音が最高です．バンドとしての完成度も高い．彼は，今で言うところのオルタナ・カントリーの先駆といっていいアーティスト．本作をロックの作品として聴いて全然差支えない．彼といえば"American fool"と思われがちだが，アルバムとしては本作の方が私は好きだ．

　「American Fool」の大ヒット後も、次作「Uh-Huh」では、変わらぬロック魂にとどまらず、自らのアイデンティティを確かめるかのように、芸名の“Cougar“ に本名の“Mellencamp”をプラスしたことからもわかる通り、より等身大の、素の自分をさらけ出して勝負していたが、今作はその路線を更に推し進めたかのようなアルバムだね。

　ジャケット写真にも顕著だが、アメリカの片田舎のブルーカラーといった市井の人々が、日々の生活で感じる「痛み」「孤独」「苛立ち」「挫折」「希望」「愛」といった普遍的な感情を巧みにすくいあげ、過不足のない演奏で紡いだかのような、シンプルにして奥の深いアルバムだね。前作までの、良い意味でのポップ性と、次作以降から顕著になる、フィドルを中心とした泥臭〜いアレンジの諸作とを繋ぐ、過渡期の作品としても捉えられるかもね。

　それにしてもメレンキャンプ・バンドのうまさといったら！ある意味スカスカなんだけど、ギターもベースもドラムさえも、一音一音、意味のある音だけが鳴らされているって感じなんだよね。特に名手K・アーノルフのドラムはまさに絶品！。80年代って、特にドラムの音処理なんかに変なエコーがかかっているものが流行りだったため、独特の“パシャパシャ”感があって嫌いなんだけど、このアルバムのドラムは“スコーン”と抜けがよく、かつ切れ味が鋭くて、この音の録り方が、このアルバムを古臭く感じさせない要因の一つではないかと思う。

　（1）（3）（5）（9）（11）と、トップ10ヒット3曲を含む5曲のシングルヒットと、商業的にも大成功した。武道館での来日公演も熱かったなぁ。ジョンの代表作にして、80年代アメロクをも象徴する傑作。「American Fool」しか知らない人には特にお勧めしたい。これぞ“ジョンの魂”さ！

　アメリカンフールからの３作はリアルタイムで聴いていたので、このリマスター盤を見つけたときは嬉しかった。会社に入社して社会人生活を始めた当時を思い出してしまって、何も手がつけられなくなってしまった。冷静な価値判断ができないくらいである。
　この作品はバンドとしての纏まりが一番あると思っていて好きな作品だ。少し落ち着いてきたかなぁとは思いますが、貫禄というか風格を感じさせる大きな音楽を演っていると感じる。このバンド、上手いよねぇ。
