彼の全作品の中でも1,2を争う大傑作「J'arrive(孤独への道)」を中心とした1968年のオリジナル盤に、映画用の2曲を加えたもの。最新のデジタル技術により、ヴォーカルもオケも大変クリアになった。作品の傾向としては、「J'arrive」や「regarde bien, petit」のように「重く、巨大な」作品群(6曲)がまず1つ。一方で、ブラック・ユーモアの極みの2曲、「Vesoul」と「comment tuer l'amant de sa femme...」があり、ニュートラルな終曲「la biere」でようやく落着く。
「J'arrive」に関しては諸説あるので、詳しい言及はここでは避けるが、当時、何らかの病気で激ヤセしたのは間違いない(ある書物によれば、この当時は「ガン」ではなかったと、はっきり書いてある)。この原題は実は日常語。「早く来て」の返答「今行く」のこと。しかし、ここで「今行く」と言っている所は、すぐには行ってはいけない所だ。「le dernier repas」('64)よりはるかにシンプルでありながら、述べられることははるかに切実だ。作曲はG・ジュアネストと共作、編曲、オケはF・ローベール。この曲は、それぞれの最高の到達点である。「regarde bien, petit」も大好きな作品。ここで歌われるのは、「白昼夢」といったところ。しかし、そこにも「死」の影がさまよう。また、はっきり地名が出るわけでもないが、この曲も、「美しいフランドル」が歌いこまれている。「l'eclusier」も特筆に値する。ゆったりしたテンポでリズムを刻むアコーディオン。ヴォーカルの静かな凄みはここにも。「水門を守る仕事も楽じゃあない」。
「la biere」は'65(?)頃にステージで歌っている映像が残っており、曲の感じも、ここに聴くものとはまったく違う、活発なものだ。それで分かることは、曲の最後の歌詞が「mon pere disait...」('67)と同じであり、もとは1つの作品だったということだ。2曲とも、改作により静かになったが、味わい深さの点では、数段増したと思う。「un enfant」も'65年の作ながら、録音はこの年まで持越し。まあ、「良い選択」といったところか。
「la chanson de van Horst」('72)は映画用の曲でジュアネストの作曲だが、この曲は、'62年にオランダのテレビで発表され、直後にボツとなった「le pendu」のものを流用している。
