1977年リリースのセカンドアルバム。　「さだまさしってどんな人？」と聞かれたら、僕は先入観を持たれやすい曲のそろう「ベスト」でなくこの作品を薦めたい。

この頃のさださんは「雨やどり」の大ヒットで見事に波に乗っていた。（新曲をライブ録音して観客の笑い声までも取り込んでしまい、しかもシングルで発表したのは今でも画期的ではないだろうか）
今作はストリングスを中心に録音の半分が米ロサンゼルスで行われた。日本国内の編成の半分で奥行き豊かで幻想的な音が生み出され、これ以降著名アーチストの海外録音をするきっかけにもなったはずである。
10曲の内容はラブソングが中心となるが、表現力の豊かさは今でも飛び抜けて優れたものである。「つゆのあとさき」「晩鐘」「飛梅」の別れてゆく（または別れた）人への慈しみ、「セロ弾きのゴーシュ」の先立った人を想いつづける女性像、軽快なリズムのシングル曲「吸殻の風景」の中にみる再会した人との和解など、彼（しかも当時20代）のシンガーソングライターとしての懐の深さに惚れ込んでしまう。
オープニング「最終案内」での、飛行機が離陸上昇してゆくようなストリングスアレンジも見事だ。

これは独断だが、無機的な安っぽいビートをバックに言葉の羅列で気を惹かせる"ラップ"が国内に氾濫してから音楽の表現力が乏しくなり、TVやFMでマニュアルをもとに作った似通った商品（作品とは云いたくない）が流れて消える風潮になったように思う。　その行き着く先の現在がどんな時代かはご想像がつくだろう。

人が生み出す音楽の力、言葉や思いやりの大切さを次世代に引き継ぐためにも再評価されるべき秀作である。

高校生の頃、なけなしの小遣いで買ったアルバムです。
シングルヒットも入ってないし、アンソロジーの方がよかったかなぁ、と後悔したこともありましたが、今改めてこの2枚を聞いてみると、こちらの方が統一された雰囲気を持っているというか、アルバム全体で1曲のような印象を与えてくれて、しみじみと「いいアルバムだなぁ」と思います。
これからもずっと聞き続けて行きたいと思わせてくれるアルバムですね。

「やさしさ故に傷ついて　やさしさ故に傷つけて」・・・さださんのシングル「天までとどけ」のＢ面「惜春」の一節です。「惜春」は最初「風見鶏」というタイトルで曲を作り始めましたが、どうしてもタイトルにできずに、でも「風見鶏」というタイトルが気に入っていたのでアルバムのタイトルとなりました。　このアルバム「風見鶏」＝「惜春」と言っても過言ではありません。　このアルバムの曲には随所に「風」という言葉が詩の中に含まれている所もさださんらしいです。
