   イタリア、ナポリに浮かぶ小さな島。政府に追われてチリから亡命してきた世界的詩人パブロ・ネルーダ（フィリップ・ノワレ）の滞在は、島の人々のちょっとしたニュースになっていた。ネルーダに郵便を届ける配達人となった青年マリオ（マッシモ・トロイージ）は、ネルーダとの交流の中で、詩の世界に触れ、恋を知り、人間として目覚めていく。
   故郷を追われたプライド高き詩人と、故郷の現状や自分自身にさえ無頓着な若者。まるで共通点のないふたりが詩を通して心で結び合うさまを、繊細なタッチで描いていく。ネルーダが島を去った後も、彼の消息を新聞記事で追いかけるマリオ。著名人であるネルーダにとっては短期間の小さな思い出に過ぎず、便りが来ることもない。それでもマリオはネルーダの残した録音機に、さざなみや風の音を吹き込む。出会いが人生を変え、信じようとする心が真実を生むというシンプルなメッセージを、心から信じたくなる真摯な映画だ。（茂木直美）

　「イル・ポスティーノ」とは、英語では「ザ・ポストマン」、すなわち郵便屋という意味である。それはそのまま、名も無き普通の人を象徴している。
　イタリアの小さな島で郵便配達をしていたマリオは、チリから亡命した革命の大詩人パブロ・ネルーダに出会う。地中海に浮かぶ島を舞台にした映像は、美しく味わい深い。しかし、マリオとネルーダの物語は、歴史に名を残した知識人とは対照的に、無名性を背負って生きる人間（多くの人はそうであるが）の生き様を描き出して、胸に迫るものがあった。
マリオが、島を去ったネルーダの置いていったテープレコーダーに、島の風景を録音するシーンなどは、とりわけ強く心に残る。波の音、風の音、星のざわめき…。それらの音を集めることが、マリオにとっての詩にほかならないのである。同時にまた、そうすることでしか彼は詩を作りえないのだが。
名作です。

重篤な心臓の手術を先送りにして本作の主演に賭けたマッシモ・トロイージの想いが焼き付けられた感動作。その事情を知って見ると、この静かな感動作がどんなアクションものよりも命がけであったことを知らされて涙が出る。彼が郵便配達の自転車を押して歩く何気ない場面は、どれほど苦しかったろう。集会の人混みの中をもみくちゃにされながら演壇に向かう場面もそうだ。
イタリアは何度も素晴らしい映画をくれた。これもその一本に数えて間違いはないだろう。

とにかく美しい映画である。映し出される風景も、丁寧な演出も、登場人物の心も、音楽も、そして交わされる言葉も、すべて詩でできているかのように、深く、衒わず、観る者に伝わってくる。
詩人と郵便配達夫の交流を描いたこの作品は、何よりまずラブストーリーである。「ラブ」というのは広い言葉だ。男女間の愛も、情欲も、友情も、すべて含まれる。そしてこの映画はそのどれもを含んでいる。もっとも、イタリア風にアモーレと言いたいところだが。
そして第二には詩論である。学者の詩論ではない、純粋に詩を愛する者たちの詩論である。それはつまり詩を信じる者の論理である。
観た人は、この映画を「私の映画」と言いたくなるだろう。郵便配達夫の「詩は作った人のものではなく、それを必要としている人のものだ」という台詞のように…。
これほど素朴で、それでいて完成された映画は少ない。映画史に残すべき名作だ。ネルーダのファンには言いたいこともあるだろうが、それは野暮というものだろう。
