ビル･エヴァンスの好敵手として、注目されたピアニストの代表作(62年作)。

さすがにエヴァンスと並び称されるだけあって、曲のリリシズムはかなりのものです。
一つ一つ言葉を大事に選ぶように、一音一音のタッチが、音の感触を選び取っています。
テンポの速い曲も遅い曲もありますが、どれもが心に気持ちよいａ派を発散しています。
またエヴァンスはあまり自作曲をやらないのに対して、フリードマンは半数以上が自作曲で、作曲センスも突出したものがあるようで、自作曲のレベルはかなり高いです。
エヴァンスよりもそういった意味では、創造的だったと言えるのかもしれません。
白人ピアニストで、リリカルで美しい調べを奏でることから、エヴァンスの好敵手と呼ばれたのでしょうが、細かく見ていくと、音の感触としては、もっとスピーディだし、跳ねていて、力強いタッチを持っているようにも思えました。
さすがに代表作だけあって、全く無駄な曲もなく、心を透明にしたいときには、ぜひ聴いていたい一枚です。

いわゆる「名盤」である。１９６２年発売当時、フリードマンは、ビル・エヴァンスの競争相手と目されていた。理知的でクールなピアノは、人気を呼んだ。その後、あまり活動が伝えられなかったが、最近では、またピアノ・トリオで活躍している。自作自演の表題曲「サークル・ワルツ」や「ソー・イン・ラブ」など美しい曲が多い。ジャケットもクールで現代美術のよう。（松本敏之）

6曲目のソー・イン・ラヴは絶品。
ソロ演奏というとjazz好きな人でもちょっと敬遠してしまいがちですが、
これは本当に鳥肌が立つほど見事な演奏。
聴き終わった後、素晴らしい映画を1本見終わった後のような
満足感と清々しさが得られます。

いわゆるエヴァンス派の中にあって、最もエヴァンスの歌心を汲んだのが

ドンフリードマンではないかと、密かに思っております。
