アフロ・ビート界最大のアーティスト、フェミ・クティの通算3作目となるアルバム。2000年10月13日にナイジェリアの巨大都市ラゴスにあるライヴ・ハウスで行なわれたライヴを余すことなく収録。

今年3月ナイジェリアはラゴスでのライヴ盤。98年末に閉鎖された、アフロ・ビートの創始者である父フェラ・クティ(97年他界)のクラブ/聖域“シュライン”をフェミが再建、新たに“アフリカ・シュライン”とした場での、である。1曲1曲は平均5分強(長くても7分半)とコンパクト、だが雄々しくうねるグルーヴは途切れることなく、旋律自体は物悲しいのに、彼の太い声・サックスとホーンズが呼応しあい打楽器やコーラスを巻き込んで展開し迸るサウンドはアフリカの窮状を訴える途方もなく強烈なメッセージと響く。それに聴衆の大合唱、1曲ごとに沸き上がる歓声。くらくらするばかりの熱気だ。たとえ彼のライヴや音楽は未体験でも必ずや接点はあり感じるはず。それが、偉大なる父を持つ2世として闘いつづけ、スタジオ録音盤では米R&B~ヒップヒップの先鋭どころとも共演(前作)してきた、新世代の、彼自身の音楽/アフロビートだから。聴けば観たい!と思うライヴ+αのDVDも近々出るようで楽しみ。 (松永記代美) --- 2004年10月号
