　開けてびっくり玉手箱、予想以上にパワフルで素晴らしい歌唱と演奏に、「これ、大当たりだあああ」と、すっかり嬉しくなっちまったＣＤ。エラ（フィッツジェラルド）とルイ（アームストロング）、ジャズのふたりのジャイアンツの歌と、高音が耳を貫くルイのトランペット。ラッセル・ガルシア指揮のオーケストラの演奏がまた、ハートにぐいぐいと響く魅力的なもので、第１曲目の「序曲」からワクワクと胸が弾みました。
　それにしても、エラとルイの歌のソロ、そしてデュエットの素晴らしかったこと！　クラシックの演奏に例えれば、最盛期のマリア・カラスとマリオ・デル・モナコのふたりのオペラ歌手の歌を聴いているみたいな、あるいは、リヒテルとホロヴィッツのピアノの巨匠が競演したみたいな（そんなのは、訊いたことないけど）、その世界の巨人ふたりの息の合ったコンビネーション・プレイに唸るしかなかったっす。凄い！凄い！凄い！なのでありました。
　エラが歌っているナンバーが、第２〜第９曲と、第11、第12曲の全部で10曲。片や、ルイの歌が聴けるのが、第２、第５、第７、第８、第10、第12〜第15曲の全部で９曲。また、ルイがトランペットを演奏しているナンバーは、第２、第５、第８、第10、第13曲。
　すべてが素晴らしかった演奏のなかでも心を揺さぶられたのは、第８曲「なんでもそうとは限らない」。エラとルイ、ふたりのスキャットに、「もう、たまらん」てな感じで興奮、脱帽させられました！
　今から半世紀前の1957年８月18、19＆28日、10月14日、ロサンゼルスでの録音。この当時の録音としては、まず最高の音質ではないでしょうか。非常に聴きやすかったです。

　「ＰＯＧＹ＆ＢＥＳＳ」はﾏｲﾙｽ・ﾃﾞﾋﾞｽ、MJQ、ｵｽｶｰﾋﾟｰﾀｰｿﾝなど世に数多くでていますが、殊にｼﾞｬｽﾞｳﾞｫｰｶﾙ・ﾊﾞｰｼﾞｮﾝとしては佳曲です。
　ｶﾞｰｼｭｳｨﾝは「ＰＯＧＹ＆ＢＥＳＳ」を書き上げるために、貧困に喘ぐ黒人の生活を目にしてその音楽を知り理解していきました。このことは彼のﾙｰﾂが迫害を受けたﾕﾀﾞﾔ系移民であったことと関係なくはありません。
　作詞はﾍｲﾜｰﾄﾞ(小説「ＰＯＧＹ」の著作者)とｶﾞｰｼｭｳｨﾝの兄ｱｲﾗ。舞台は大成功とは言えませんでしたがｶﾞｰｼｭｳｨﾝの死後(35歳)に再認識されて全米各地、ﾖｰﾛﾊﾟで上演。
　楽曲は序曲(OVERTURE)に始まり続いてｴﾗ＆ﾙｲが絶妙に歌い上げる「ｻﾏｰﾀｲﾑ」~最後に「おお主よ,私は祈りの道を」でﾙｲが感動的なｸﾗｲﾏｯｸｽを迎えます。ｴﾗのｺﾝﾄﾛｰﾙしながらもﾄﾞﾗﾏﾃｨｯｸな歌唱力、そしてﾙｲの歌とﾄﾗﾝﾍﾟｯﾄ･ｿﾛ。楽しめる一枚です。

ガーシュウィンの名作オペラであり、クラシック畑の演奏家による録音もあるのですが、ジャズ畑寄りだった作曲家の目指していた演奏は、これではないかと感じられる名録音です。ＬＰでは２枚だったものが１枚のＣＤに収められ、エラとルイという超絶プレイヤーによる歌心溢れる演奏はクラシックの発声法よりも心が込められ、聴き手に訴えかける強さは、他に無いのでは？と感じさせてくれます。スコア全曲が収められている訳では無いのですが、さすがに、プロデューサー、ノーマン・グランツらしく、ツボは外していない！約８０分という長さは、現代の聴き手にも丁度良い長さであると思う。音楽ファン必携でしょう！
