1937年録音なので、確かに聞き苦しいが、なんとか鑑賞にたえる。それよりも、こんな録音が保存されていたことに驚かされる。しかも、フルトヴェングラー盤のような欠落もなし。

トスカニーニの指揮は、1930年代ウィーンの演奏様式をよく伝える。弦はビブラートひかえ気味で、弦、管、歌唱、いずれも輪郭がはっきりしている。それと、トスカニーニという人は、意外にテンポ・ルバートしていたことが分かる。

上記歌手陣の充実も聞き物である。とくに、ザックス役のハンス・ヘルマン・ニッセンは、のちの名だたる歌手たちも超えることができなかったのではないかと思えるほど良い。あと、マリア・ライニングも良い。

トスカニーニは、さすがにオペラ指揮者出身だけあって、音楽の進め方・運び方・作り方・歌手の歌唱のさせ方がうまいと思う。録音が良ければ、これは、決定的《マイスタージンガー》になっていたかも知れない。

鑑賞に足る音質を満たしていないということで、星ひとつ。
演奏も、リズムが縦割り的で、ワーグナーの音楽としてはかなり退屈な仕上がりになっている。
トスカニーニの悪い部分が出てしまったアルバムといえる。
