このアルバムは日本人にしか創り得ないオルターナティブ・ロック、そんな作品。
ポスト・ロック的な変速と変則のコードの流れとは一線を画する囃子のような拍子のとりかたに、切れを多用した節回し。
このバンドはあぶらだこのエソテリックな知識を引き継ぎ、それにアロハシャツを羽織らせた感じ。
そういう点では、あぶらだこの音楽を聞いた事のある方はこのアルバムを聴いて面白みは感じても、驚きや真新しさは感じなかったと思います。
このアルバムが好きで、あぶらだこの音楽を聞いた事の無い方は、亀盤と言うアルバムの八曲目に収録されている「落札」を聞いてみて下さい。
気に入った方は青盤、木盤に進むと思います。
ただ、あぶらだこの音楽にハイカラさはありません。
当時は究極のマージナル・マンとして孤立していたあぶらだこの遺伝子はこんなところにもある。

たしかにこりゃもう間違いなく唯一無二だ。しっかし決して聴いたもの全員が絶賛できるような作品ではないこともまた間違いないと思う。今のザゼン支持の大きなうねりは嬉しいけどなんだかちょっと恐い。

向井ファルセットにニヤニヤしてしまう1や、読経ラップに圧倒される3、10、12、13など、リズム隊もギターもそりゃもう鳥肌立つかっこよさで大好きだ。が、この作品、良くも悪くも異物感ありまくりで、中には奇を衒ったように見えちゃうところもあり、今のとこさっぱり好きになれん曲もある。ザゼンボーイズはこれからのバンドだと、期待はものすごいしている。
と言いつつも何度も何度も聴いてしまうあたり、この作品の持つ中毒性は半端ないんだろう。ちょっとしたら大好きになっちゃってるかもしれん。
とりあえず、有名になればなるほど、より鋭くよりストイックに進化する向井氏の在り方は、とてつもなくかっこよい。

ZAZENBOYS聴くとあらためて自分は向井秀徳に夢中なのだと思い知らされた。
あんなダッサイおっさんに夢中なのだ。
ダサイくせにこんなかっこいいアルバム作りやがる。

このアルバムはスゴい。
ナンバーガール時代よりも達観しているというか、確信をもって歌う向井に迷いがない。
そして念仏ラップにのせて迫る歌詞が脳にダイレクトに伝わり、揺さぶる。

曲も表現の幅が豊富になり飽きないし、バンドの音も申し分ない。
だが、様々な意味で試行錯誤という面も見えなくはない。
ZAZENBOYSはこれからさらにスゴいバンドになっていくのではないかと期待してしまうのだ。

しかし、これだけ自分の意見表明をきちんとしながら音楽活動をしている人も珍しい。

それがある程度受け入れられているのだから本当に向井の存在は貴重だと思う。
現代日本に違和感と危機感を持ってる人にも聴いて欲しい一枚だ。
