このＣＤの元版は、僕が生まれて初めて買ったＬＰです。毎日聞いたし、これでギターも始めました。
だから、というわけではないですが、ベストとしての評価ばかりなので、”アルバム”としての１００％肯定論を書きます。

本作は、解散説が囁かれていた'７０年にポールとアート自らが選曲し、名プロデューサー／ロイ・ハリーも加わり、
それまでのスタジオ・ライブの録音を全てを再検討し生み出された「Greatest Hits」です。

だいたい、１曲目が「MRS.Robinson」で最後が「CECILIA」、これって世間一般のＳ＆Ｇのイメージと随分違いますよね、明るすぎ・・。
「Bookend」なんてベストにはそぐわないし、４曲が'６９年のツアー音源などからのライブで、拍手が次のスタジオ曲にかぶる・・。
これでは確かに”ベスト”を期待しては不満が出でも仕方がないでしょう。

アルバム発表は、'７２年の大統領選での民主党／マクガバン候補支援コンサートでの復活ライブの直後でした。
小学生からの友人である二人にとって、「デュオ解散＝友情の終わり」であるはずがない。
この後、それぞれソロ活動が本格化したことを考えても、これはいわゆるベスト盤ではなく、二人のある時期を綴った”トータル・アルバム”なんです。

持っているヒトは、そう思ってもう一度聞いて見てください。きっと違う印象を受けるはずです。
まだ買っていないヒトは、当然買うべきですね。
やっぱ、名盤だもん・・。ジャケットの表裏の彼らの写真も、良い表情していてサイコーです。

今更何故こんな中途半端なベストＣＤなんかと思われますが、解散の噂があった当時公式発売された初ベストです。しかも未発表ＬＩＶＥ音源を収録し前後を拍手でつなぎ、実況録音盤のようにする工夫がされ、６枚目オリジナルアルバム的扱いの作品です。紙ジャケで再発されるに伴い、最新２００７年リマスタリングされたため買いました。ＬＰのミックスを忠実に再現？と期待しましたが、｢いとしのセシリア｣は残念ながらステレオミックスのままで、モノからステレオへ変化するミックスは見送られていました。スタジオの機材が著しく進歩していく過程で発表された彼らの曲は、やはり忠実に再現することで意味が出てくるのだと思います。全体的には音が良くなっているのでそれなりに意味はあると思います。単なるベストを望んでいる方は買わないほうが良いと思います。ポールサイモンのソロＬＩＶＥ盤が何故再発されないのか不思議です。

７２年発売のＳ＆Ｇ選曲によるベスト盤。ライヴ・ヴァージョンやリミックス・ヴァージョンを収録しています。
Ｓ＆Ｇのアルバムを全て揃えても購入する付加価値の付いたベスト盤です。
しかしながらライヴ曲の後の5.サウンド・オブ・サイレンス、9.明日に架ける橋のイントロ部分に拍手が被って繋げられた編集がされており、どちらも超名曲だけにイントロからスッキリ聴きたい方には難点かも知れないです。
初心者の方は他にもベスト盤が出ていますので、そちらの方が収録曲も多くお買い得かも知れません。
下記の４曲がライヴ・ヴァージョンです。個人的にはポールの１２弦ギターに合わせてガーファンクルが歌う「エミリー・エミリー」は素晴らしいです。
