red garlandのリーダー作(大半がピアノ・トリオ)は膨大に録音されリリースされていますが、“ガーランドを何か１枚…”というジャズ・ビギナーの方にはまずこれを強くおすすめいたします。

garland盤の大半はpaul chambersとart taylorが共演者であり、５６年頃から約３年に渡って、prestigeレーベルがこれでもか…と言わんばかりに録音し続けました。それらの中には実に渋い好演奏も数多くあるのですが、あえて“１枚だけ”…となると、やはりこれです。

…他のレヴュアー諸氏の大変的確なコメントにある通りで、本作のベースは上記chambersではなくsam jonesが担う。これがgarlandのトリオ録音に“新鮮な風”を吹かしている。jonesとgarlandの求心的な絡みを随所で聴ける点が素晴らしい。メリハリある音色を伴った、躍動的な演奏の光るjonesの起用は大正解。

chambersとはまた性質の違う、安定感とスリルの同居が非常に巧く表出されている。

garlandの名人芸であるバラード演奏は、本作では確かに少ないのですが、２曲目“see see rider”の蕩けるような深いコクを感じさせる名演が１つあれば私は十分お腹いっぱいでした。taylorのブラシも至芸といってよいノリと香ばしいサウンドが横溢しており(音が非常によく録れている)、garlandとの諸々の競演中でも随一の演奏が聴かれます。

どうぞ、夜も深けて１人きりの自分のお部屋で、ジャケの雰囲気と色調をじっくり眺めながら傾聴していただきたいです。肩の力がすーっ…と抜けていきますよ。

タイトルどおりブルース・ナンバーのオンパレード。
ブルーを通り越してもう、まっくろけですわ。
この演奏はボビー・ティモンズのトリオより黒いかもしれません。
ベースがポール・チェンバースでなくサム・ジョーンズというところもミソですね。
録音も実に素晴らしく、アート・テイラーが全曲ブラシでドラムを叩いているのですが
はじけるスネアの風圧が感じられるようです。
「まっくろけ」とはいえ、さすがにレッド・ガーランドのこと、泥臭くなる手前でおしゃれにまとめています。
そう、まさにこのジャケットのイメージどおりの音楽です。
ジャケットのガーランドが言ってそうですね。「どうだい、これがジャズメンのブルースさ」

レッドガーランドは金太郎飴だ。何を聴いても皆同じ。確かにそうも言える。だが、本作は少し違う。相変わらずのドラムスはアート・テイラーだが、ベースがポール・チェンバースではなくサム・ジョーンズなのだ。これが「大きい」。チェンバースのような推進力に欠けるベースなので、リズムナンバーでもレッドのピアノがコロコロと転がって落ちずにその一歩手前でしっかりと踏みとどまる。スローナンバーではブルージーでダークなベースがローダウンな雰囲気を上手く演出する。ブルースの町に住むレッド・ガーランドは居心地がすこぶる良さそうだ。
