メセニーの盤はほとんど全部持っていますが、個人的には一番好きです。カントリー、フリー、ストレートアヘッド、バラッドなど彼の土台となっている要素・原点がこの時期から確立されている事に非常に驚かされます。２テナーのＭ・ブレッカーとＪ・レッドマンの親父であるＤ・レッドマンはそれぞれフリーっぽい曲の中で、個性を発揮していて面白いです。アルバム最後の方の「EVERYDAY」でのブレッカーのソロなどはほんと気持ちいいですよ！

　１９７０年代には、所謂フュージョンが大きな力をもった。８０年代に入ると、また少しずつ潮流は変わっていく。Ｐ・メセニーｇも、当初は、取り敢えずはフュージョン系の音楽家として捉えられていただろう。本作は８０年に録音されたもので、パットが、所謂アコースティック・ジャズ、それも、かなり先鋭性や新しさを含んだものに挑戦したということで、当時も大変な話題を呼んだし、既に現代ジャズの古典とされている。
　２枚組で、メンバーは、Ｄ・レッドマンとＭ・ブレッカーｔｓ、パット、Ｃ・ヘイデンｂ、Ｊ・ディジョネットｄｓ。簡単にいえば、１や７，８が、パット独特の、典型的な米国ギター音楽の色彩が強い楽曲。その間に、バップ的ナンバー、Ｏ・コールマンの４、ジャム的な５などが並ぶ。
　最初に本作を聴いたときには、ちょっと雑然とした印象をもった。１で、マイケルがいきなりフリーキー・トーンを吹き始めたときはどうしたのかと思った。だが、改めて聴くと、それなりに構成されているのがわかる。パットのｇが、いつも通り歌心を重視しているのには好感がもてるし、やはりｂ・ｄｓが素晴らしい。録音も見事。前衛好きの私の嗜好からは少しずれるが、既に古典扱いなのもうなずける。ちなみに、１の後半、ヘイデン作曲の部分は名曲。

このアルバムは何といってもデューイ・レッドマンとマイケル・ブレッカーという組み合わせが最高に面白いと思います。これもマンフレート・アイヒャーがきっと1枚も2枚もかんでの取り合わせだと思いますが、曲という曲すべてが結晶化したような強いポリシーと美しさで何度聴いても感動します。特に「EveryDay」のブレッカーのテナーはおそらく彼の演奏でもNo.1ではないでしょうか。25年間の愛聴盤。
