   ビリー・ホリデイは1915年4月7日メリーランド州ボルティモアの生まれ。1959年7月17日、ニューヨークで亡くなった。44歳だった。子供のころ、ルイ・アームストロングやベッシー・スミスの歌をよく聴いたという。売春罪で投獄され、麻薬容疑で逮捕されるといったドラマティックな人生は、本にもなり、ダイアナ・ロス主演で映画化された。
   本のタイトルにもなった「奇妙な果実」というのは、リンチの末、ポプラの木に吊るされた黒人の死体のことであり、これは人種差別に対する告発の歌。このようにシリアスな曲がヒットチャート入りするとは誰も予想しなかったが、1939年にビルボードのシングルチャート16位にランクされるヒットとなった。声高に叫ぶのではなく、ビリーは終始淡々と抑えた感じで歌っている。それが説得力を生み、聴く者の心を締めつける。本作の目玉はそのタイトル曲だが、ほかの曲もすべて素晴らしい。1939年から1940年代初頭にかけての名唱を収録したビリーの最高傑作であり、ジャズヴォーカル不滅の金字塔である。（市川正二）

なんて感情を押させて歌う人なんだろうと、ビリー・ホリデイの歌声を聴く度に思ってしまう。黒人のリンチと言う重い主題の「奇妙な果実」をビリー・ホリデイは情景をメロディに込めて歌い描く事だけに専念している。そして耳を傾けた聞き手は描かれた情景の辛辣さに身動きが出来なくなってしまう。このアルバムに収録されている「奇妙な果実」の初録音（３９年）テイクは幾つか録音された「奇妙な果実」の中でも有名な音源で聴いてみればその素晴らしさは誰もが感じ取る事が出来るだろう。収録されている5「ハウ・アム・アイ・トゥ・ノウ」~16「明るい表通り」は４４年に録音された音源だが、ビリー・ホリデイのフレージングは大胆であり木目細やかさにより磨きがかかっている。特に恋人との別離を歌った「アイル・ビー・シーイング・ユー」は止めどなく涙が溢れ零れてしまって仕方がない。

ビリーホリデーのCDは2枚目ですが、声に不思議な感覚を憶え哀愁を感じて引き込まれました。奇妙な果実は在庫切れがほとんどで入手できたので凄く嬉しかったです。ビリーホリデーの歌声とメロディーは、私の精神安定剤です。

「奇妙な果実」の意味を知れば、ビリー・ホリデイがどのようなタイプの歌い手か想像がつくはずです。つまり、魂の歌い手です。歌が彼女の生き方とも混在一体となって、彼女の人生そのものに聞こえてくるのです。圧倒的な説得力です。

彼女の全盛期の歌声は残っていないなどとも言われたりしますが、その意味では、このアルバムは貴重な財産です。
エラ・フィッツジェラルドの楽しい歌声も、サラ・ヴォーンのテクニックもジャズヴォーカルの醍醐味ではありますが、ビリー・ホリデイの魂の叫びを聞くのも悪くはありません。

彼女の生き方に思いをはせながら、静かにこのアルバムを楽しんでみるのも良いものです。
