ドビュッシーのピアノ曲が聴きたい、そう思い始めたあの頃、私は当代きってのドビュッシー演奏家と言われるミシェル・ベロフのピアノ録音集を買ったのだった。音が非常にクリアで結構は結構だが、どことなくギクシャクしていて、私にとっては肌に合わないものだった。先鋭な感じばかりで、いかにも直球的なところがいけなかったのかもしれない。

しかし、同じＥＭＩのワルター・ギーゼキングは違った。ピアノの持っている音色を最大限に生かしている。強弱にしても緩急にしてもメリハリが効いていて、実にいい。曲が綺麗に流れる。曲によってはまだ私の体感とは違う速さで駆け抜けるものもあるが、その速さには順応したくなる魅力がある。「ゴリウォッグのケークウォーク」など元気のいい曲においては特にそう。

ところで、解説に「ギーゼキングはラヴェルとドビュッシーの演奏においては試金石であり、他の演奏は忘れ去られた」ということが書かれているが、ドビュッシーやラヴェルよりもモーツァルトの方が売れているようだ。モーツァルト弾きは確かに多いから、抜きん出たものではないのだろうけれど、このドビュッシーの曲集はもっと売れてもいいと思う。

ドビュッシーといえば最近、岩井俊二監督作品「リリィ・シュシュのすべて」のなかで「アラベスク」という曲が使われた。私はこの映画で初めてドビュッシーの作品をを聴いた。それまでは名前すらも聞いたことがなかった。

「アラベスク」という曲は何かに例えるのなら「青空」だろう。これはまぎれもない。壮大なスケールを感じさせるだけではなく、とにかく優しいのだ。この曲の出だしをできることなら聴かせたい。それは本当だからだ。
