黒澤明監督が敬愛する随筆家・内田百ケン（松村達雄）の後半生を、その教え子たち（井川比佐志、所ジョージなど）が主宰する「まあだかい」を主軸にしながら描き出していくヒューマン映画。
現代では失われがちな師弟愛の美しさや尊さなどが、黒澤作品独自の極彩色の映像美でつづられていくが、そこには黒澤監督自身が歩んできた幼い日への憧憬が多分に込められているとみていいだろう。黒澤モノクロ映画時代を支えた名女優・香川京子が主人公の愛妻として久々に黒澤映画出演を果たしたことも、ファンにはうれしい話題だった。
なお、黒澤監督はこの後『海は見ていた』の映画化を試みるも果たせず、また『雨あがる』の脚本を記すなどの活動を続けていたが、結果としては惜しくも本作が遺作となった。（的田也寸志）
