人工知能研究者であるデビッド・フォットランド氏が開発したAIエンジンを搭載したコンピュータ対戦型囲碁ソフト。シミュレーション機能により、次の一手に悩んだ場合に、枝分かれした複数のウィンドウで別々の局面を指すことが可能。また、インターネットから棋譜をダウンロードして研究することや、棋譜の途中から対局、棋譜ごとにコメントをつけて棋譜データを管理することもできる。19路盤、9路盤、13路盤のモードを用意し、置石やコミの設定が行えるほか、「弱い」から「強い」までの4段階の棋力レベルを設定することができる。TCP/IP、IPX/SPXの2種類のネットワークプロトコルに対応しているため、インターネットやLANを通じてネットワーク対戦が行える。さらに「AI囲碁 5/6/7/2000/2001/2002」で保存した棋譜ファイルを直接読み込めるほか、バージョンに関係なくネットワーク対局が可能。今バージョンでは、囲碁の打ち方から定石など基本となる考え方を解説した「囲碁ガイド」を収録。

銀星囲碁３も保有しているが、ＡＩ囲碁の方が断然早い！
また、２つのソフトを実際に対局させてみたが、
互いに黒番で勝ち、１勝１敗だったが、
目数差でＡＩ囲碁の勝利であった。

思考速度・強さともに囲碁ソフトの中では最強に近いソフトだ！

2002年6月21日発売された人間との対局を重視した最強アルゴリズム搭載。1998年FOST杯コンピュータ囲碁選手権準第3位プログラムがベースになっている。
