当時ドイツの気鋭の若手監督だったヴェンダースがハリウッドに招かれて撮ったハードボイルド探偵もの。ロビューミュラーのロケ撮影なしというハンデながら、場違いに思える題材でもヴェンダースはそれなりにきっちりとまとめているように思える。こんなヒットしそうもない作品に壮大なセットを組んで撮影させたコッポラの当時の勢いがうかがえる。まあそれが祟ってその後破産してしまいますが。ヴェンダースはコッポラとはうまくいかなかったようで、アメリカでのメジャー仕事は本作のみとなっています。地味な作品だが、当時を再現したセットによる独特のムードは見ごたえありだ。

確か２０年近く前の１２月２５日、チャップリンの「街の灯」を観に行った時の同時上映が「ハメット」だった。
最初は暗い映画だなと思って観ていたら、次第にのめり込んでしまった。
時代背景も良いし、何よりも主演のフレデリック・フォレストが抜群に決まっている。
最後のシーンでTHE ENDとタイプを打って締めくくるところにはシビレてしまった。

ヴィム・ヴェンダース監督でフレデリック・フォレスト主演。ムード満点のセットで繰り広げられる物語と渋すぎる俳優は見ているだけでいい気分。フレデリック・フォレストが凄くいいし、この人が主役の映画は他には聞かない。僕の中では非常に貴重な映画です。
