   戦前の土佐の侠客「鬼政」こと鬼龍院政五郎（仲代達矢）の壮絶な半生を、養女・松恵（夏目雅子）の視点からつづっていく文芸任侠映画。実娘・花子（高杉かほり）を溺愛しながらも、その一方で血のつながっていない松恵と心通わせる鬼政の不可思議な絆はあまりにもせつなく、数々のダイナミックな殺陣シーンにも勝る情念の迫力を醸し出す。
   自身、背中に入れ墨をしょった侠客でもあり、銃砲所持で逮捕の憂き目に遭っていた映画監督・五社英雄の起死回生の作品。また、「なめたらいかんぜよ！」の名台詞でも知られる薄幸の名女優・夏目雅子の代表作でもあり、さらには撮影、美術など、映画ならではのコクと気品に満ち満ちた傑作である。
   原作は宮尾登美子で、以後『陽暉楼』『櫂』などなど、土佐を舞台にした彼女の小説が続々映画化されることになった。（的田也寸志）

夏目雅子が出ているという情報と五社英雄のやくざテイスト映画という認識位しかなかったが、みてみるとなかなか面白く見ることができた。夏目雅子さんについては死んでしまってからの情報しかないのだが、ご多聞にもれずこの映画の中の彼女はとても素敵で、他の作品も見てみたくなった。
また1982年の作品だということを調べるためにいくつかのレビューサイトをみたところ、花子役の人の面構えに関していくつか否定的なコメントが目立ったが、僕は作品の中であの人以外ないのではないというくらいはまっていてすごいキャスティングだと思った。花子の悲しさががうまく表現されているのはキャスティングによるところが多い気がする。

『なめたらあかんぜよ』の決め台詞。
この映画で夏目雅子は一躍時の人となった。
無論彼女はこの映画に出る前から既に活躍はしていたのだが、あの映画ほど巷にブームを巻き起こした邦画と言うのは私の記憶には無い。

夏目雅子の迫真の演技もさることながら、彼女を取り巻く仲代達矢に岩下志麻、それに脇を固める俳優人がまったく見事な存在感をそれぞれ持っていた。
そうしてその存在感が互いにぶつかり合いながら、ある種の迫力となっている。
五社英雄が既にこの世の人ではなくなってしまった今、これほどの映画を現在作ろうとしても作れるものなのか考えさせられる。

子供の頃にTVで見たときはストーリーを理解できなかったけど
大人になってから見直すとその完成度の高さにただただ絶句します。
なんといっても仲代達矢の演技が凄くて・・

ストーリーの展開とともに時代背景の移り変わりや、
それによって変化する鬼政たちの状況なんかの描写も細かく表現もされています。
たとえば、晩年財政難に陥った一家を表現するのに割れた窓ガラスをテープで貼って
修理してあるような細かい描写があったり、とか。
同時に鬼政や組員たちも歳を重ね、それに応じた演技の変化も見どころです。
そして最後には覚悟を決め自分の死について語る鬼政・・
どんな世界に生きていても人間の根底にあるものには変わりないなぁと思ってしまいました。
